4 H Club Achievement Night Honors 4 H Leaders

The Pontotowoc County 4 H federation held its annual Achievement Night in the East Central State College Student Union Ballroom. Michael Lucas led the program with Haliburton giving the invocation and Patricia Tiffin leading the club ritual. Wanda Young and Lucas highlighted the National 4 H Club Congress in Chicago, with awards and honors announced for numerous members and volunteers.

Oklahoma Reports 1957 Traffic Toll Soars to 698

The first unofficial tally of Oklahoma traffic deaths for 1957 reaches 698, up 11 from 1956 and just under the 70 per cent forecast by the Safety Council. Pontotoc County records six deaths, up from three in 1956, as officials note more names may be added from ongoing hospital injuries.

Muddy Boggy Boys Push Watershed Expansion in Ada Meeting

About 50 landowners attended a hastily called Aldridge Hotel gathering in Ada to expand the Muddy Boggy watershed project from 73 000 to 242 000 acres. Officials from Pantotoc Hughes Coal and Atoka counties joined, with Juge Lavern Fisher noting it could become a Valley of the Nile. A Jan 22 full membership meeting at Allen High School was scheduled.

ASC Promises Early Pay on 1958 Reserve

The County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Committee says payments for 1958 Acreage Reserve will be issued promptly as performance is determined. Certificates will be issued farm by farm after verifying harvest limits, farm allotments, total soil bank base crops, and no suspected violations.

New Grower Cotton and Peanut Allotments Open

The Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation office in Ada invites new grower applications for cotton and peanut allotments. To qualify for cotton, the farmer must rely mainly on farm income, have no other cotton allotments, and apply by February 17. Peanut new grower eligibility mirrors cotton with a February 14 deadline and two of the last five years growing peanuts.

Livestock Association Elects Officers in Pontotoc and County

The Pontotoc and County Livestock Association elected officers for 1955 and discussed feeder pig sales in the area. Officers named were Leonard Young Fitzugh president and Bruce Carter Clarita vice president, R B Tiffin Vanoss secretary, and Harevey Carter Clarita treasurer. Directors include H D Richardson and Walter York Byng, Dale McDonald Allen, L A Slutte Clarita, Darwin Bumpers Vanoss, Charlie Shackley and Carl West Francis, and Bill Webb Tishomingo.

OCIA Spring Directory Of Certified Seed Released

The Oklahoma Crop Improvement Association issued its spring planting seed directory listing Oklahoma Certified seed growers and acreage that passed field inspection. Buyers should verify certification status before purchasing specific lots. The directory includes nineteen crops such as broomcorn, hybrid corn, cotton, cowpeas, soybeans, millet, clover, sorghum and more.
