Children Scatter As Orphan Home at Byng Closes Doors
The Baptist Orphan's Home at Byng voted to close after dwindling from a peak of 50 children in 1947 to seven. The last children Joel, Jimmy, Joanne, Judy and Jolene left for Oregon to live with an aunt. Superintendent George F Gladish and his wife remain as occupants while plans for the property are decided in about two months. The 217 acre site includes barns, orchard, and a five bathroom main building opened in 1940 and run by Oklahoma Baptists since 1942.

Blacks Outsell Whitefaces In Annual Coal County Sale
The Coal County Breeders Association held two sections on Feb 7 and 9 in Coalgate. Aber deen Angus cattle outsold Herefords with 55 Whitefaces selling for 10,250 and an average around 186.38. Angus cattle sold Saturday for 9,720 total, averaging about 218.20, about 32 per head higher than Herefords. The sale marked the first time cattle were judged and graded before the auction by Bud Ewing and Charles Smallwood. Champion Hereford bull was BVR Larry 16th, bought for 300. F&F Real Plate 17th tied for top price at 300.

Volunteers Still Needed by Oklahoma GOC Amid Radar Push
Oklahoma Civil Defense head Tom Breit says thousands of volunteers are still needed to man Ground Observer Corps posts as radar detection expands. Major Joe Caraway, GOC coordinator for Oklahoma, says 25,000 more civilian volunteers are required to enhance the system and maintain a 24 hour air warning, with a goal of 420 posts. He notes no changes planned for Oklahoma GOC and cites ongoing funding of about 15 million dollars to train personnel and keep equipment at peak readiness.

Old Francis landmark torn down after years as bank and phone exchange
The old Francis State Bank building, built in 1903 and once hosting the Francis post office and telephone exchange, was demolished Sunday. Local memories note its long vacancy of 25 to 30 years and hazards to schoolchildren. The current property owner is Art Minnick of Tishomingo.
