Ada High School officials say students avoid extreme trends with hair and clothing. Principal Elton Stewart notes some boys prefer longer hair nicknamed Prince Charles or Kennedy but insists the looks remain non extreme and under control.
Bad weather arrives and boosts quail and goose hunting across the state. Warmer days gave way to moisture and cooler drizzle, improving conditions for quail dog hunters and goose shooters. Goose season runs through New Year. quail through Jan 15 with statewide quail fair to excellent and tens of thousands of geese at refuges.
Oklahoma health officials warn residents not to sell or use plastic water filled ice balls after lab tests show heavy bacterial contamination including Staphylococcus aureus Pseudomonas species and coliforms with plate counts over one million per cubic centimeter. Dr. Northrip and Dr. Mosley urge immediate avoidance.
The Agriculture Department forecasts the 1966 wheat crop at about 1.361 billion bushels, below domestic and export needs of 1.4 billion. Winter wheat plantings fell 6 percent from last year, with seedings down 3.5 percent. Oklahoma is seen at 119.945 million bushels, down from 132.916 million in 1965.
The U S Fish and Wildlife Service approves 25000 pounds of Rainbow trout to be stocked in the Illinois River below Tenkiller dam. Stocking may begin February and run through October with trout averaging 8 to 10 inches. Hatcheries in Arkansas will supply the fish.
Vanoss Cub Scout Pack 195 met at Vanoss school with den mother Mrs. Harold Haines. They rode a bus to Ada visiting Ballard and Hester nursing homes singing carols, then returned for cold drinks and cookies. Attendees included Mrs. Bob Wait, Gary, Jimmy and Wally, Marx Barnes, Eddie Lance, Lloyd Hunt, and others. thanks were given to Mr. Ed Berryman for transport and Mr. Lonnie Barnes.
U.S. Representative Tom Steed, in Ada for an official visit, toured the Robert Kerr Water Research Center and spoke at McLish High School about the Indian Adult Education program. The 4th District congressman, a senior member of the Appropriations Committee, praised the students and urged persistent effort as 24 enrollments grow in the Oklahoma pilot project supervised by the Bureau of Indian Affairs and funded by the Office of Economic Opportunity.
Ada voters defeated a proposed one-cent municipal sales tax 1,130 yes to 2,184 no in 24 precincts, carrying only four precincts and one tied box. Mayor Hudson urged studies on city needs and possible service adjustments while cities like Ardmore and McAlester recently approved similar taxes.
Civil Defense specialists from the University of Oklahoma and the state agency led a public information conference in Ada at city hall. They outlined local and federal phases of Civil Defense, stressing strong local government roles and survival planning amid a five megaton nuclear blast scenario.
All beef cattle producers are invited to attend a three week short course in January at Latta School. Classes run January 6 13 and 20 with afternoon and evening sessions and a dinner. Pre enrollment is required and the five dollar course fee covers meals door prizes and supplies. Oklahoma State University specialists will conduct the classes.
