The Pontotoc County Pecan and Pecan Food Show held at the extension center crowned Grand Champion LeMoine Crabtree for native sampee whose entry advances to the State Pecan Show. Opal Evetts won adult Grand Champion and Vicky Stanford led the junior food division with Pecan Cake. A young man about 20 entered the Quick Shop at 1000 E. Std and demanded money. Virginia Phillips told police the gunman said I am not fooling. He fled when three customers entered about 6:50 p m Tuesday.

Oklahoma youth earns national 4-H scholarship
An Oklahoma youth who raised crops and beef and dairy cattle was named one of six national 4-H scholarship winners. Mike Steward, 18, of Shawnee, received a 1700 scholarship from International Harvester during the 50th National 4-H Congress in China November 28 to December 2. Steward, son of Mr and Mrs Ernest Steward, is a freshman at Oklahoma State University and plans a career in agricultural biochemistry. He served as president of the Oklahoma City District 4-H Council and has shown the grand champion bushel at the Pottawatomie County Fair. He began field crops projects to finance college, with wheat, maize, cotton, hay and soybeans, and has three brothers and three sisters on a 500 acre farm. He learned about soil care and moisture, was top individual in state livestock judging, represented Oklahoma in the International Land Judging Contest, and was named his county’s 1971 4-Her of the Year. He was valedictorian and maintained straight A’s, earning university and Farmers Home Administration scholarships. He has projects in safety, forestry, public speaking, conservation, crafts, recreation, leadership, health and automotive.

Nations top young farmer is a Sooner
CHICAGO Illinois Oklahoma Farm Bureau's outstanding young farmer is named the national top young farmer at the American Farm Bureau Federation convention. Sam Countiss, 28, of Waurika Oklahoma, a cattleman, has built a large operation on 1240 acres with mortgaged land and credit ties to his father's record. He runs 1000 steers 230 cows and a diminishing sow herd on 4200 acres, using crossbreeding to raise calf weights, and champions soil conservation while backing a future cross with Browns and Charolais. He left the Jefferson County Farm Bureau board after three years as president and is one of three nationwide winners of this honor.

Oklahoma City A Game Division tally shows 5 629 deer harvested in the opening nine days of the gun season with counties not yet reported and days remaining. Osage County led with a 234 pound buck, while Guthrie and Barnsdall hunters yielded notable 233 and 234 pound prizes as eastern and northeast Oklahoma produced the bulk of the kill.
