Soap market trends spark debate on detergents comeback

Washington AP reports Agriculture Department researchers say soaps may rebound if detergents fail to penetrate the bar soap market. Synthetic detergents have captured much of the market since World War I, with soap sales around 2.9 billion pounds in 1950 dropping to 1.1 billion by the late 1960s. The ERS notes fat and oil demand fell as soap displaced by detergents, with tallow use declining 56 percent from 1950 to 1970 and stabilizing near 0.6 billion pounds annually. Continued on page 3.

Bill Burpo Named New Co op Manager in OK

E. VY. Loomis, longtime manager of the People's Electric Co op, was honored at a retirement party in the Oklahoma Room of the East Central Student Union. Bill Burpo, his assistant, succeeds Loomis as manager while Burpo has served four years with the co op. About 90 attendees, including employees and spouses, attended the event.

Food costs for children rise with age says USDA

The Agriculture Department estimates feeding 9 girls from infancy to 18 costs about 8300 and 8908 for a boy, with costs increasing as children grow. A family with two schoolchildren may spend around 2100 yearly on food for the children, and a four-child household could reach 30000 to 32000 for the period.
