USDA AMS projects higher overall farm production in 1959 with farm prices modestly lower and off farm income rising. Cattle prices expected to stay strong though fed animals may dip. hogs face price declines while dairy milk output climbs. Record feed grain and hay supplies support continued high production and stable demand as population grows.
Local landowners of the Upper Clear Boggy Conservancy District met Tuesday night with members of the flood control planning party. planners presented 50 potential detention sites across 250 square miles and outlined engineering challenges for each while weighing the cost and protection trade offs.
Ralph Wofford of Ada was elected president of the Lula Homecoming Association at the annual banquet Saturday evening. Mrs. Ralph Wofford is secretary and Mrs. D. R. Clifford, vice president. Worley Hokett, a teacher at Alten, recalled old times as a teacher at Lula. The banquet was an alumni event.
Pontotoc County will send at least 21 pecan samples to OSU for analysis before the State Pecan Show in Bristow December 9 and 10. OSU experts will judge nuts per pound kernel percentage quality color and shelling. The Lula Home Demonstration Club hosted a November banquet with local families in attendance.
In 1953 two men sought Mrs. Dale Melton at Gaar Corner to help start a correspondence center for ADA WEEKLY NEWS. She agreed to write Gaar Corner news from her Melton Grocery vantage point, noting local telephone limits.
Bids for the first construction unit of the Sandy Creek flood control project were opened Thursday afternoon. The apparent low bid was $146,624.19 from H. S. & B. Contractors of Wewoka, with six bids total. Other bidders included Paul R. Moody Construction Co. of Pauls Valley, M. A. Swatek & Co. of Oklahoma City, and J. L. Putman and Son of Ada. Work is set to begin within 30 days after contract award, with dirt turning expected shortly after the new year.
LATTA The Wesley Brantleys are proud of their registered Jerseys herd. An official classifier from the American Jersey Cattle Club rated one excellent cow, 25 very good and four good plus, placing them among the state's top herds.
Mrs. Barnes says Arkansas is not for her and she would not live there even if given the land. The Barnes family recently returned from a trip to Arkansas where Mr. Barnes grew up. They planned to keep Oklahoma and perhaps Texas if needed, while transporting Jack to keep it on the road during their drive down Five Mile Mountain.
