Recount looms before job can be placed on Busby's shoulders as the county finishes its election tally. The judge's race remains unsettled and could trigger delays in filling a key post.
Pontotoc county election results final after a week of counting show Ait Erwin edging Jim Byrd by 238 votes for county tax assessor. Other winners include Tal Crawford for county judge by 1091, John Ward for county weighman, Clay Stephens reelected commissioner, and W A Peek, B C Harbert unopposed in clerk and surveyor races. District judge recount remains unresolved awaiting court action.
In Pontotoc county activity rises around the LaSelle holdings as operators pull casings and rigs form. Hagar et al prepare to clean the Empire location on Haggard farm while Tidal Oil builds a rotary rig for an offset. Humble Oil and Carter Co advance multiple offsets and rigs across sections 28 5 5 18 3 4 5 3 4.
George W. Green, 50, industrial commissioner for the Frisco railroad, died in a highway crossing accident five miles north of Menominee while traveling with his wife and son. The family’s journey from Chicago to the West Coast ended in tragedy when a wheel drop caused the car to tip. Green was pinned beneath the wheel and fatally wounded. He leaves relatives in Amarillo Fort Smith and Ada Oklahoma.
The victim was a brother of C. F. Green of Ada. On learning of his brother's death Mr. Green left at once for St. Louis.
The Ada Independents plan a two-week road tour facing top state teams. The itinerary includes Stroud Comar Denison Wilson with August 17 departure from Ada to Durant and games with Denison Texas Marietta and Wilson, then a northern leg featuring We tumka Weleetka Stroud and Comar. Most players to travel except Harl Johanson.
Judge John E. Martineau led Gov. Tom J. Terral by about 7 000 votes in the Democratic gubernatorial race as unofficial returns from over half the precincts showed Martineau ahead. Terral gained about 1 000 votes in 1 087 precincts giving him 42 709 to 49 705 for Martineau. Congressman Heartsill Ragon appeared renominated.
W A Barnett county judge and A E Graham filed separate applications to disqualify Judge James Hepburn of the district court from charging the August grand jury and in the Fixico receivership case. They accuse Hepburn of conspiracy and prejudice, while Hepburn called the petitions an attempt to brand him corrupt. Hearing set for Wednesday morning.
Ardmore, Aug. 11. Ardmore plans elaborate preparations for the annual Oklahoma Department American Legion convention and affiliated groups September 5 to 7. The state Legion Auxiliary and the Department Forty or Eight meet concurrently as the city welcomes World War veterans to a historic forum.
In a split results update Congressman Joan N. Tillman leads Karl Greehaw by 700 votes in the third district tally, signaling a close race across the state district.
In a charged atmosphere the county election board started a recount of votes for district judge and state senate after 1 pm. Witnesses from all campaigns packed the district courtroom as watchers guarded the process. J W Bolen sought the recount after losing district judge by 44 votes. Otto Strickland pressed for the senate recount despite winning county results. Lester Smith said he trusted officials and agreed to the recount to accommodate Strickland.
In the August 3 primary count in Pontotoc county with 2000 of 5000 ballots polled, Orel Busby leads J W Bolen in the Ada district judge recount while Otto Strickland remains tied with Lester Smith for the state senate. The recount progresses slowly as officials near the halfway mark with results unfolding amid a shrinking crowd.
The crop forecast shows 15.5 million bales this year with August 1 conditions at 69.8 percent of normal. Oklahoma stands at 79 percent. Government estimates imply possible yields from 14.4 to 17.5 million bales depending on late season conditions.
Fred Simola and Frances Zabinski, two youths of foreign descent, are jailed on second degree robbery charges after an attempted holdup of Eldo Whipple near Steedman. The stolen car they rode in was abandoned six miles away and later traced to John Morrow of Butler Indiana, stolen in Tulsa. The pair face arraignment before Justice H. J. Brown.
The August government bulletin showed cotton conditions at 69.8 with a crop forecast of 15,621,000 bales, sending prices sharply lower. October futures slid to $16.40 and December to $16.30 as the market fell 66 to 83 points from prior levels and more than $4.00 from Saturday's close.
Groundwork on Twelfth and Townsend court house advances with cement piers and solid foundation. Vern Logan oversees 24 workers rushing to complete first floor foundations and boiler room excavation as the project moves toward the main structure.
Papers of the corporation were prepared to protect the affairs of the Pontotoc County Free Fair Park association. The incorporation for 160 stockholders covers 1600 dollars and funds will build a permanent park. The group will not incur indebtedness. A few shares remain to be sold before construction begins.
Congressman Tom D. McKeown led the district in the primary with a wide margin over Claude Hendon. Hendon carried only Johnston County by 300 votes, while McKeown swept Pottawatomie by over 1100. District total plurality reached 6,985 amid county by county tallies.
