Ada gears up for a five night rodeo from August 13 to 17. Top cowboys arrive as stock begins to come in. The annual show opens Tuesday with a 4 PM parade and Grand Entry expected to be the largest in years, says Sheriwood O Nea l, president of the rodeo association.
Frisco last Thursday night Bob Byrd and Ada coon hunters hunted south of Prisca. After a treed coon Bob jumped from a lower branch onto a sharp object injuring his foot. He received 12 stitches and was sent home on crutches. He cannot drive a new Mercury until healing.
Approximately 1,000 Oklahoma school lunch program employees attended two University of Oklahoma State workshops in July 15-19 and 22-26. Sponsored by Oklahoma State and the state education board lunch division, the sessions drew 520 and 470 attendees respectively, covering recipes nutrition planning purchasing work simplification and equipment. Local attendees from Pentotec County included Ethel Boydison Mary Durant Ina Henson Homer Iona Gilmore Ollie Mae Hall Marie Phillips Neltie Hodges Viola Pipes Mrs. J. Southerland Pickett Tucker and Summers Chapel participants.
Fred Buswell of north of Qakman discusses six decades in sheep farming. He recalls childhood memories with sheep and emphasizes care as key to success. This year he sold 623 pounds of wool from 54 sheep and earned 900 dollars from lambs, planning to expand his flock to 130 or 140.
Oklahoma State University agronomist Dr. Ralph Matlock announced the annual Peanut Field Day at the peanut experimental farm near Stratford for September. The 1955 event was the last field day. floods caused a cancellation last year. Over ten tests will be shown and discussed by OSU agronomists during 3 p.m. tours, followed by an evening program after lunch served by Clay Potts.
Twelve Pontotoc County Home Demonstration Council members attended the 40th annual Farm Home Conference on the Oklahoma State University campus in Stillwater from Tuesday through Thursday. The event featured a semmi centennial pageant a yesterday and today dress revue and a world homemakers slide presentation. County demonstration agent Martha Mote and assistant Valdene Kozel joined county delegates led by Mrs R J Brock council president with attendees from Fitzhugh Colbert Byng Lela Sumner Chapel Vanessa Hart Midway and other communities.
Vanoss schools announce enrollment for new pupils to begin at 9 a.m. on Monday August 19 with bus runs as usual until adjustments are made. No lunches will be served on that day as enrollment nears completion around noon. Beginning pupils must bring birth certificates. Regular classes start August 26.
Don Thurman 17 of Route 5 Ada sustained serious injuries when his motorcycle struck a dog near Tishomingo Wednesday night, crashing the bike. He was in fair condition Thursday at Valley View Hospital after initial treatment in Tishomingo. The accident occurred about 11 o clock as Thurman traveled to a local doctor, then to the hospital.
Shelby Stanfield plans a Wednesday demonstration with a vacuum sweeper to finish harvesting button clover on his ten acre north of Roff area aided by Cy Hailey and the Noble Foundation. An August 14 field day from 9:30 to noon at Stanfield’s place will draw about 150 attendees as the vacuum method tackles the remaining 35 percent of unpicked crop.
Services were Monday afternoon for Mrs. Kizzie Boland 77 who died at her home Route 5 Ada Saturday morning. The funeral was at Smith Funeral Chapel with Dr Roy C McClung officiating and burial in Memorial Park. Survivors include husband Jim daughters Zona Jennings Sallie Weaver Bertie Horton Jimmie Aubrey of Ada Lena Winters of Oakland Calif a brother Case Turner Ardmore a sister Ossie Smith Bennington 19 grandchildren and 36 great grandchildren.
