Stanfield’s West of Lightning Ridge hosts second Button Clover field day. A combine yielded 1,290 pounds of seed, a suction harvester added 900 pounds, totaling 2,190 pounds or 219 pounds per acre at 50 cents per pound. Hay and grazing add further value.
The 22nd Ada Rodeo began with a downtown parade and opening ceremonies. About 1250 horses and riders moved from Main Street to the fairgrounds and circled the arena in the grand entry. Seminole led the roundup, followed by Pauls Valley, Lindsay, and Stratford.
George Brashier, 59, was injured Tuesday when a horse he was riding was struck by a hit and run car at Eighth and Town in Ada. He was admitted to Valley View Hospital with fractures possible head and internal injuries and facial lacerations. Police described the vehicle as a black 1949 Ford with damage to the right front. license number not obtained.
Seventeen local ranchers representing 3200 cattle gathered at Walter Mayer place north of Stonewall to view a steer feeding trial. Sixty nine steers were fed a new grass supplement since June 14 for 37 days, with Mayer reporting an average cost of 9.50 per head. Purina sales manager O J Strout explained feeding plans and adjustments based on grass quality and cattle. A field day sponsored by Martin Purina Feed Store in Ada concluded with a weight guess contest.
Jim H Nelson, OSU graduate, is appointed county sanitarian for the Health Department in Ada replacing Mills Garrison who moves to Ponca City. Garrison served since 1947 and ends Aug 16. Nelson, 22, is married with one daughter and will reside at 218 East Fourteenth. He attended Rat t an High School and earned a BA in Agricultural Education at OSU and studied at the Southwest Field Training Course for Sanitarians at OU Norman.
Pickett School will enroll pupils for the 1957 58 term on Monday August 26 at 8 30 a m daily. The hot lunch program begins opening day. Mrs Bill Bevers is principal and Mrs Charlie Dunn is the other instructor.
Physical cure from tuberculosis is not enough. rehabilitation to restore daily living is as important as stopping the spread of the tuberculosis bacillus.
Flood control projects for Sandy Creek and Upper Boggy Creek gain momentum. Congress has approved the Sandy Creek plan for final action, with support from Senator Kerr and Congressman Steed. A $280,000 federal allocation targets three state projects, Sandy Creek among them, while planning proceeds for Upper Boggy with surveying set to begin late October or early November.
Rev. and Mrs. Muril Wilson were honored with a farewell picnic after church services at Sportsmen's Lake Park in Oakman. About 89 people attended the daylong event featuring buffalo goat beef pork and chicken as the couple concludes a year of pastoring at Oakman church. He will serve at Stonewall Free Will Baptist Church next year with replacement Rev. Scott Jones taking over in Oakman.
Mrs L Burns of Stonewall will move to Davenport Town to teach a third grade in the public school system. She sold her Stonewall home but keeps a rental house there to remain a potential return location should she move back.
Francis Sherman Lewis recovers after a severe leg bite while visiting Tulsa relatives. The dog, belonging to Mr and Mrs Bob Walker, appeared suddenly and was placed under observation as doctors treat Lewis.
Carolyn York of Baldwin Park California faced a missing wedding gown on the scheduled date. She and fiancé Delbert Weller traveled to Stonewall where Rev. Robert Stallings officiated at the Church of Christ parsonage, and the couple married as planned despite the delay.
Summers Chapel school will enroll for the fall term on Monday August 19 according to principal J D Underhill. Regular classes start Monday August 26. Lunches begin on the first day. Mrs Veiva Underhill teaches lower grades and Mrs Ollie Tucker is the lunchroom cook.
Ada Chamber of Commerce agents rally merchants and civic groups to support the free county fair amid debate over a 4425 annual cost. County agent Hailey notes most funds fund premiums and labor. Old Settlers Day Sept 18 and Old Fiddlers contest with cash prizes are planned. A baseball tournament Grandstand program and safety measures at the fairgrounds are also arranged.
