Readers were surprised by a misprint in the Jesse news. The item should read that Randy Humphers was four Tuesday, not found on June 21. Editors apologize to Randy, Mya Humphers, and Mrs J. Markley for the error and mix up.
Craig County faces a quarantine order as Gov Gary calls in National Guard units. Drs Don Williams and Harvey Price advise vaccination only if outbreak reaches the area, stressing anthrax is not airborne and transmission needs direct contact with contaminated material. They warn of rapid progression and recommend veterinary checks for any sudden animal deaths.
Oldtime residents recall mad stones used for dog bites, a practice seen as effective though unsupported by modern medicine. Two surviving fragments, once part of a larger stone from Acts merchants Sol Moss and John Scribner, are now with Lula Henry and Loreta Bowers, linking current residents to a bygone cure.
Vaness Grad Class of 1955 highlights Boyce Jones of Lightning Ridge who, with his father and sister Joyce, runs a 80 acre farm with 25 cows producing 14 000 to 15 000 pounds of milk monthly. The operation began as beef but switched to dairying in 1956 after a drought, now using Holstein Jersey cross, with plans for a Holstein bull. The Jones family participates in 4-H and Future Farmers of America and Boyce earned the Junior Master Farmer degree in 1955.
Oklahoma farmers relied on local banks for most farm credit in 1956, says HJ Huddleston of the Oklahoma Bankers Association. As of January 1, 1957 banks held 102.354 million in farm loans, with insurance companies next at 81.426 million and Federal Land Banks at 34.402 million.
Reverend R T Rorie, pastor of New Bethel Baptist Church in Byng, will depart Tuesday August 6 for Little Rock Arkansas to enter the Missionary Baptist Seminary. He has led Byng church for six and a half years, previously studied a year at the seminary, planning a five year course completion. The Rorie family includes two daughters Louise 17 LaVern 13 and a son Bud 15. Louise was valedictorian of Byng 1957 and won an East Central State College scholarship, which she is giving up to be with her family and possibly attend Live Rock University.
In a Valley View Hospital room Mrs Tom Barnes of Sulphur recounts Cedar Grove and Francis roots, detailing I Rupe who taught the first Cedar Grove school in 1885, later moving to Sasakwa where he funded a church, and his death in 1903 at age 36. Barnes' tale links to Dr Richie and local figures as oldtimers fade.
