Ghost fleet of 180 ships kept in reserve on Hudson River
The National Defense Reserve Fleet on the Hudson River holds 180 ships in mothball status, maintained by a 155-man crew at about one million dollars annually. They serve as ready sources of ships, leased for revenue and some used as floating grain silos. The system was created after lessons from World War I and II and Korea to prevent shipping shortages in wartime.
