Francis native Gene Crews lives in a Francis Bank vault repurposed as a home. The two foot thick walls stay cool with shade from trees and house stove electricity and air conditioning. Crews, a Frisco Railroad conductor, also uses the vault as a gathering place for local rail workers.
Purina hosted orientation tours at its Pontotoc research ranch drawing up to 200 guests daily as the 9 330 acre facility opens to the public for the first time. Dr Jim Williamson led sessions with Wade McMillan and Dr Bill Praska while C C Armstrong hosted. Research covers cattle nutrition disease control and record keeping with computer evaluation. the study spans creep feeding vaccinations and pest control.
The Ada Farm and Ranch Club will hold a pasture tour next Wednesday to study brush and weed control. Starting at 1 15 p m from Ada Livestock Auction, stops include Flying M Ranch Lee Elliott Ranch Bunny Rogers Ranch and M W Whitmire Ranch, with a meal funded by First National Bank and Trust Co Reservations end Monday at 10 a m with county agent or Soil Conservation Office Ada.
