W Riddle, now 88, recalls Ada area’s early days after moving from Barry County Missouri in 1891. He describes Indian Territory life, Stonewall, Reed’s store, and a romance with Lou Ann Hatcher amid old mail and postmaster rivalries as the frontier faded into memory.
Oakman Sportsmen Club completes a private lake project covering about 8 to 10 acres near Oakman on a 40 acre lease. Members estimate total cost around 3500 with about 2000 cash, aided by donations and a pie supper fundraiser. The pond will be the county’s largest water-holding lake, with a 10652 cubic yard earth dam and drainage area near 200 acres.
County agent Cy Hailey and assistant Ellis Freeny with Dick Stroud and Oklahoma A&M College conduct a third year pasture fertilization experiment at Stroud ranch. Ten plots laid out with five treated and five as checks. Fertilizers include 100 pounds ammonium nitrate and several 10-20-10 and 0-20-0 mixes. Harvest around July 1 for yield analysis to assess economic viability for farmers.
John R. Hawkins of Fittstown has been admitted to Oklahoma A&M Tech Okmulgee for the spring term starting April 30. He will enroll in the Diesel Mechanics program.
Mr and Mrs John Allread heard a wolf howl near their Frisco home and found a den after noon Saturday. He killed the old wolf when she appeared at the den and then killed six pups found inside. Neighbor Schley Stegall heard howling nearby but hasn’t heard them for days, thinking it tied to the killed animals.
The Vanoss Fourth Sunday singing convention meets Sunday April 2 from 2 to 4 p m at the First Baptist Church of Vanoss. Ben Thompson president will be in charge and quartets as well as the general public are invited.

The panel includes Frank Jared Bennett Sherrer Norman Mitchell Dick Walker Mills Garrison Byron Smith and Glenn Floyd. The event April 25 at First Methodist Church Ada begins 9 30 a m with rural grade and high school divisions. Top 12 boys and 12 girls advance to the state roundup in Stillwater late May.
The Federal Civil Defense Administration advises motorists to carry food, water and at least a half tank of gas at all times to be prepared for emergencies.
Pontotoc County 4-H land judging team travels to Wilburton on Saturday April 21 for the southeastern district land judging contest and the pasture and range school. Members are Darrel Bryant David Calvert Michael Lucas and James Lucas from Byng Fitzhugh. If they win they reach the national contest in Oklahoma City in May and will compete in the state contest regardless of result.
Stillwater Oklahoma reports on the Tornado Research center at Oklahoma A&M College led by Dr. Herbert L. Jones. The center uses the Static detection system to locate and track tornadoes within a 130 mile radius, with U. S. Air Force cooperation and radar points across multiple states. The goal is to reduce yearly tornado deaths and property damage.
