County agent C H Hailey advises Pontotoc county turkey producers to begin brooding poults now. Start 95 degrees, drop 5 degrees weekly, provide ample space and clean brooder houses. Plan 300 poults per heating unit, 1 sq ft per bird, 16 ft feeder space per 100 poults first 4 weeks, then 24 ft after.
Tom Nesmith trained by Everett Shaw and Dick Truitt won dogging and placed second in calf roping at Stonewall spring show as large crowd watched cowboys and cowgirls. Kiowa’s Clark McIntire claimed first in calf roping with a 13.5 second run following a recent world steer roping record.
About 75 area sheepmen met at Fitzhugh School on Thursday April 5 for an all day session on profitable wool production. County agent C H Hailey organized the extension service event noting room for more sheep in the area. He cited favorable winter climate and grass quality in southern Pontotoc County and said the wool from local flocks is clean and high quality.
The J. C. Allen residence at Ada Route 3 was burned to the ground in a late night fire. Firemen arriving at 1 05 a m found the five or six room house fully engulfed. The eight children in the home escaped unharmed, and damage included furnishings and personal effects. The oldest daughter, 14, said the blaze began Friday afternoon in the wiring and rekindled later as the entire house went up.
The MERRY WHIRL program brings Bob Pollock of Fitzhugh area and Newton Flora to discuss worming and parasites. Bob Payne outlines wool cleaning and handling at shearing. Bennett Sherrer explains current wool and lamb incentives. Fred Heep favors yearling ewes and Hampshire Dorset and Suffolk rams. W. H. Camp demonstrates predator control with cyanide bombs and traps, featuring a live coyote and bobcat. Attendees from six counties attend tours of Pollock and Wingard ranches and last year’s shearing crew Weir returns May 1 for 1956 shearings.
The Pontotoc County Soil Conservation District cancelled its Tuesday April 10 ministers meeting at Carlton Corbin's Stoney broke Ranch due to only one acceptance of 57 invitations. The session aimed to brief pastors on soil conservation ahead of Soil Stewardship Sunday May 6. The board will distribute material on stewardship to all area ministers.
The Spotted Alfalfa Aphid devastated county alfalfa stands forcing many farmers to plow under fields and seek substitutes like sericea lespedeza millet sorghums and cowpeas. County Agent Cy Hailey reports variable spray results with malathion and parathion while some growers push to replace losses with future hay and pasture crops amid rising costs.
Detour changes due to Mississippi Avenue construction shift traffic via Lake Road to Tenth Street and Ninth Street before rejoining Mississippi. Once the south end reaches Fifteenth Street, detour will move west to Hope then north to Sixth, resuming normal routing.
STILLWATER Oklahoma A M College schedules the 30th Aggie Feeders Day for April 21 featuring more than 20 research reports and a talk by George Ellis of a New Mexico Hereford ranch. About 2 000 people are expected to attend to hear trials on breeding and feeding livestock and see experimental pens and summarized data from tests on cattle sheep and swine in the past year.
The Frisco Pontotoc Special arrived in Ada Station Saturday at 5 p.m. with 13 carloads of travelers including about 900 people from Tulsa. Passengers unloaded reluctantly and boarded 16 buses to reach street level for a city pleasure trip.
Vanoss FFA sent teams to the Oklahoma A&M Tech contest at Okmulgee on April 4. Meat Judging took fifth with David Golden Btch Sut ton Frank Lamirand and Max Law. Poultry Judging placed fourth with Charles Stonecipher Ray Hicks Trent Briggs and Jimmy Pedersen. Guthrie won overall cup, Guyman second. about 600 competitors from over 30 towns across the state. Crops Judging included David Sutton Bill Briggs David Brother and Paul P. N. L. Hensley is instructor.
