Craven Brown, a Black man, was tried last week for burning C. O. Scrivner’s livery barn at Stone Wall. The jury returned a verdict of not guilty.
Ahloso justice court hears a custody dispute over Solomon Brooks, a fourteen year old enslaved boy. Jack Foreman seeks to reclaim Solomon from Laura Buller via replevin, offering a cow and calf as bond security. County Judge Terrell orders Solomon returned to his mother after habeas corpus proceedings.
A Springfield merchant recalls a tale where doctors warned a boy’s consumption was hopeless until Dr King’s New Discovery was used for three weeks. The product claims to cure coughs and lung diseases, selling 50 cents to a dollar with a trial bottle offered.
Proceedings list payments and allocations for county operations including scavenger work horse burial, jail services and staffing, office supplies, bridge construction, road work, and poor relief. The Christian church schedules services next Lord's Day with 11:00 a.m. sermons by two professors from the normal faculty and 8:00 p.m. lectures by Prof. Rolla Sears on Queen Esther. Pastor C. E. Smootz invites all to attend.
H. E. Werner arrived from Chicago yesterday and is conferring with the 25000 club regarding establishing a machine shop. Werner is an expert machinist and has strong letters from firms he has worked for. We hope he will join as a member.
The presidents of the normal schools announce regular enrollment totals at Ada 322 Weatherford 450 Durant 362 Alva 411 Tahlequah 302 with higher overall numbers including training and sub-educational departments. Prof Briles disputes the figures saying Ada ranks third and omits the model school from counts.
Donaghey Addition lots are selling quickly with unusually low prices. Buyers are urged to invest in property expected to grow and loans are offered with easy terms for building a home.
