Governor's Mansion tours reflect Michigan history and DAR stewardship
The Governor's Mansion, built in 1839 for Marshall capital hopes, housed Michigan's third governor James Wright Gordon. The Greek Revival residence preserves original fruitwood floors, a walnut-curved staircase, and 1800s artifacts. Doric columns were made in Detroit and hauled to Marshall by oxcart. Since 1966 the Mary Marshall DAR chapter owns and restores it. Current updates include new donations and a planned south wall re-siding by the local Masonic Lodge with a grant from the Marshall Community Foundation. It is on the National Register of Historic Places and in the Historic American Buildings Survey.
