Rose Hill Inn History and Notable Owners
Rose Hill, an Italianate house built in 1860 by Edward Butler on land once owned by James Fenimore Cooper, later served as William Boyce’s summer home in the 1890s. Jerry and Carol Lehmann bought it in 1997 and opened Rose Hill Inn Bed & Breakfast in 1999, preserving the original form with porch changes, a rebuilt garage, storm window updates, and attic finishing as living quarters.

Rose Hill historic home tour item preserves 19th century furnishings
The house showcases furnishings from the 1860s to 1890s including an 1894 restored grand piano and a rose ceiling painting by Michael Peck. Trench art on the second parlor shelves, a Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam in a front parlor bookcase, and a history of neglect and revival by Harold Brooks and the Ells family mark its restoration from the 1930s. Rose Hill last appeared on the Marshall Historic Home Tour in 2007.
