Albion Pioneer Started Mother's Day Tradition in 1870

A historical note from the Journal of Albion recalls Albion man Charles Calhoun Blakeley promoting a national Mothers Day decades before Anna Jarvis. Blakeley honored his mother, Juliet Calhoun Blakeley, who conducted a 1870 church Mothers Day service, inspiring local observances and his family’s prominence in Albion’s early life. The article ties Albion’s 14,000 population, 1844 college building, and Blakely family legacy to this local celebration origins. It also mentions Daval's Used Furniture storefront and historic Blakely Apartments.
