Tumbleweeds tale from Russia to the American West
In an NPR discussion the tumbleweed known as Russian thistle spread from Russia to the American West, first reported in 1877 in South Dakota via flax seeds. By 1900 it reached the Pacific Coast, inspiring the song Tumbling Tumbleweeds. Personal recollections link family, homesteading, and dusty plains memories to the weed and its Western myth.
