NOAA reports January 2012 was the fourth warmest on record for the contiguous United States with an average of 36.3 F, 5.5 F above normal. Meteorologist says west-to-east zonal flow kept Arctic air north while warmer air stayed in the U S, with February to April showing above normal warmth in the south-central and southeastern states and drier conditions in the south.
