The local band Dance and the Grind headlines the 8th Annual Blues Festival in downtown Marshall on Saturday July 16. They perform from 2 to 11 p.m. at the beer tent on N Eagle Street with Danae Huggett noting the eclectic sound due to diverse musical backgrounds. See story on page 40.
J W Townsend and Michigan Kitchen Distributors leaders kept the Marshall operation resilient during the recession era, aiming to outlast downturns. After a strong 2010, 2011 is projected to stay robust, per page 30. Jonah Curtis of Oaklawn Life Improvement Center proposed a community garden, later approved by OLIC directors Becky Willis and Curtis. The garden aims to help hospital workers and residents without private plots to grow local produce, per page 14.
The CDC estimates up to 70 million U S adults have a sleep or wakefulness disorder with sleep apnea a major factor. Corina Owens a polysomnography technician at Oaklawn Hospital Sleep Center notes the disorder affects up to 25 percent of men and 9 percent of women and remains severely under diagnosed with about 85 percent unaware they have it. Marshall Public Schools use the summer break for teachers to pursue professional study and collaboration. Curriculum Director Saundra Hainline says staff stay up to date with new educational techniques technology and philosophy to promote student success and high achievement.
Artist David McKee, who helped create the Gasoline Museum with Walters, finishes the final of three panels showing Marshall’s shift from rail to auto transport. A blank cinder block wall owned by Dick Walters is referenced as part of the development.
