Wet weather harms Halton hay crop rotting in fields
The wet weather over the past weeks is reducing hay quality in Halton with rotting hay in fields and a likely shortage of the first cut. Some predict a milk production drop due to lower quality. Standing hay loses quality if left uncut, while cut but unbaled hay rots at the bottom. Prospects for a second crop remain excellent as grain crops mature with frequent rains.

Optimal alfalfa cuttings and fall fertilization guidance
Dr. Jack Winch of Ontario Agricultural College reviews alfalfa harvest timing for winter survival. He notes three cuttings possible in southwestern Ontario with early cuts and two in northern areas, stressing September top growth, root food storage, and fall fertilizer application after August for strong root development and next year yield. Continuous soil analysis is advised to tailor fertilizer needs.
