Conservation plan to buy dam land under new grants
The Grand River Conservation Authority will present a plan early next year to buy land for five proposed dams under a boosted Ontario grant scheme. The $30 million flood control program would gain 65 percent grants with $2 million set for land purchases, reducing net costs for municipalities. Dams planned at West Montrose Everton Guelph Hespeler and Ayr aim to protect floods, improve summer flow and recreation. Funding includes provincial 65 percent grants plus federal 75 percent shares, with local levies and benefits-based shares covering the rest. Land purchases to occur over five years as the program proceeds.
