Overtime and weekend hours piled up as sleet and snow blanketed the town. Plows and sanders operated district wide while residents complained about blocked roads and driveways. Police towed few cars for overnight parking violations as they enforce the rule.
Acton Mayor Les Duby predicts the town will stay around 7,000 to 10,000 people, with expansion within current borders before any annexation. He envisions growth east and north, a selective industrial park with a few small light industries, and continued municipal operations during a move to regional government in two years. Federal transit needs and GO service on CNLR are highlighted.
Acton council adopted a resolution opposing Bell Canada rate hikes sought from the Canadian Transport Commission with charges rising for residence and business lines. The meeting also discussed GO train expansion and transportation policy, while Halton leaders anticipate regional government and a buffer municipality between Toronto and Hamilton, with a January 22 unveiling planned for Peel County.
There was sadness at the Acton council final meeting Monday night as councillors exchanged compliments with incoming replacements. Councillor Charlie Perry praised the last two years as gainful and foresaw a tough year ahead for the council and community.
Acton council proceedings were lightened when the Acton Citizens' Band played outside the chambers after talks on appointments. Mayor Les Duby thanked the band before asking them to move on, as Councillors Williams Drinkwalter Perry Hinton and others reflected on the meeting. The new council sees Hinton joining the Development Commission and Drinkwalter and Perry taking places on the Planning Board.
Acton Council will not host the traditional Twelfth Night Christmas Tree burning due to new anti pollution laws. The town will still collect trees on Friday January 3. Reeve Hinton and Mayor Les Duby stressed compliance with air pollution controls to set an example.
A single accident on Mill St in Acton last Friday involved a Papillon Main St vehicle that rolled in reverse and struck a parked car owned by John Vlietstra. The Vlietstra car sustained 90 dollars in damage while the Papillon vehicle remained undamaged. The report also notes minimal holiday police activity with one liquor seizure and one minor consuming under age during Christmas week.
Acton Chamber of Commerce president Paul Nielsen envisions ten town changes for 1969 including a 10 percent population rise, new and expanding industries, urban renewal, and a health spa. Fairy Lake to become recreation focus, education to involve schools more, and shoppers see a major chain opening.
