Armistice Talks Blocked as Insurgents Fight On in Cuba
Insurgent leader Ino Guerra in Pinar del Río rejects a ten‑day armistice amid a renewed government push to pause fighting. Reports say Guerra’s force numbers 3,000 to 4,000 and controls San Juan de Martinez, while government troops under Col. Avalos total about 1,000 with limited transport. The clash over peace prospects intensifies as rebels attack railway bridges and press for political terms.

Skeleton Found Under Floor in Burned Hut Near Trout Lake
In Sault Ste. Marie Michigan on September 8 a skeleton was found beneath the floor of a partially burned hut in woods near Trout Lake. The hut had been occupied by homesteader James Jones until about a year ago when he died by his own hand. No missing person is recorded and the identity of the man under the cabin remains unclear. Some settlers believe murder, not suicide, led to the burial under the floor. A watch and a secret society emblem were reportedly found. Jones, educated and reclusive, lived four miles from Trout Lake and was said to have killed himself over alcohol.
