Sailors land in Havana as US forces encamp near palace
A detachment of about 120 American sailors from the cruiser Denver landed near Havana's La Fuerza castle and pitched camp by Plaza de Armas to protect American lives and property amid insurgent activity in Havana province. The move followed talks between Mr Sleeper and Commander Colwell. The landing surprised Cuban authorities. orders later called for most sailors to return to ship, with the detachment remaining on shore.

Big Packing Plant Fire Damages Cudahy Wis Facility
Milwaukee dispatch reports the Cudahy Bros Packing plant at Cudahy six miles south of Milwaukee suffered major fire damage Thursday night into Friday morning. The six story building housing lard refinery beef house glue works and killing department was heavily ablaze with 600 workers left without work. The blaze started in the lard department and cause is unknown. one man was reported killed but later corrected. Firemen were injured while fighting the flames. the plant will be rebuilt. Insurance covers about 460000 in losses.
