Governor Lister’s Fourth of July address in Hoquiam centers on the nation’s manhood and liberty under legal restraint. He cites the Declaration of Independence, unity after Gettysburg, and the need to reduce warfare while upholding equal rights.
The first Chautauqua on Grays Harbor opened at Electric Park with fair attendance and promising weather. The six day program features lectures, concerts, and Indian cultural displays led by Miss Carole and the Seton Indians, with events continuing through Saturday Abraham Lincoln Day.
A Cadillac owned by Rudolph Distler of Cosmopolis turned turtle east of Elma on a straight road. Four women and a man were trapped under the car. two were hurt but not seriously. Mrs Distler and her 15 year old daughter were among the injured as rescuers arrived.
The Grays Harbor Railway and Light Co begins pouring concrete for a new car barn at Electric Park. Contractor Joseph Tiefenthaler aims to erect the steel frame and concrete roof in about three weeks, weather permitting. The 105 by 110 foot iron clad building will hold 15 large cars, with a reinforced concrete roof and heavy iron wire mesh. 750 barrels of cement are needed.
Miss Rena Flowers and James Anderson of Ocosta were married in Montesano on Thursday. After a wedding trip to Tacoma for the Montamara Festa they will reside in Ocosta.
The county board met in Montesano with two taxpayer represented matters. A petition for Moclips incorporation was debated with opponents urging delay and questions about bona fide residents. Action deferred to the first Saturday in August.
Governor Ernest Lister and a state commission will visit Grays Harbor to inspect the C D Hansen and Quinsaul t roads as part of establishing the Olympic Highway. The party will dine at Grayport Hotel in Hoquiam and tour the routes by auto with local officials, returning Friday.
The county auditor listed numerous marriage licenses issued last week to couples from Aberdeen Montesano Hoquiam Elma Satsop Elma Olympia West Coast towns and others including W F Horton Rachel Jones J L Medcalf Lydia Byleau Robt Shelton Mona Ray and many more with partners named for proceedings in Montesano and nearby locales.
The first annual Grays Harbor Splash in Hoquiam drew over 20 000 visitors across a three day celebration. Aberdeen and nearby areas sent large crowds, with streetcars carrying about 12 000 passengers between towns and Northern Pacific trains filling up. The parade, led by Governor Lister and local judges, featured lengthy routes and a record parade, with winners in Fraternal Nationalities Commercial and Decorated Auto sections named.
July 7 Olympia state fire warden E W Ferris warns county commissioners and highway engineers to enforce forest fire rules, noting some officials resist burning slash on rights of way. He cites improving compliance among loggers and mills and no major fires due to favorable weather. He praises industry cooperation and distributes a company notice urging prevention measures.
Nickola Koevich was arrested in South Aberdeen on charges of stealing chicken and will face a hearing before Judge Phillips this evening.
Washington July 3 President Wilson has a currency reform bill introduced in Congress. It creates twelve regional government banks over national banks and enables automatic currency expansion to prevent tight money. The measure centers control with the President and Treasury, reducing Wall Street influence and aiming for nationwide prosperity.
A nearly 16 pound lead ball was found on the right-of-way of the Co C L T Co railway four miles northeast of Montesano. The object resembles a shot used in athletics and its origin is unclear with theories ranging from an escapee’s ball and chain to a stray relic. Frank Thompson, superintendent of local logging, brought the ball to Montesano.
