Mrs. E. N. Conlee elected at Hoquiam meeting as head of the Federation of Woman's Clubs of Chehalis county. A lifelong clubwoman and founder of the Cosmopolis Research club, she led the Century club of Oshkosh and held multiple leadership roles in Wisconsin before moving to the Pacific Coast.

Father and Son Drowned in Quiniault River

Hoquiam reports the drowning of F. J. Houltine a Quiniault valley pioneer aged 56 and his 17 year old son Emil after a canoe capsized on the upper Quiniault river while returning from George Melbourne's ranch. Bodies not yet recovered amid swift water and lake currents. Hilda Houltine, a daughter, is dangerously ill with pneumonia at Hoquiam General hospital.

Receiver's Sale of Union Mill Confirmed

The Union mill sale to Geo. Fleitz for 166000 was confirmed by Superior Judge Ben Sheeks in the superior court. Lumber was bought by C. M. Weatherwax for 16200 instead of Anderson Middleton. Plans to resume operations are underway and Fleitz aims to begin running the plant soon.

Battle over Quinsault salmon pits firms against reservation

On Quinault Reservation a three way cannery battle unfolds with Kurtz Packing in Moclips, Pacific Fisheries redeveloping Shaffer plant, and Co-Operative Canning planning a new site at Moclips. Indians may gain leverage to raise prices after years of the Kurtz monopoly. Last season over 200000 fish yielded about 75000 dollars shared by 33 family heads.

Halferty, a noted cannery man, bought 840 acres near South Bag through Ellis Marten & Co for 37000. The land is mostly bottom land and will be improved soon as spring approaches. buyers from Hoquiam and Aberdeen seek small tracts and more than 20 new homes are planned for this spring with others to follow next year.

Union Depot work to start by March

J D Farrell president of the O W Railroad and Navigation company states bids for a new union depot for the Oregon Washington Railway Navigation Chicago Milwaukee Puget Sound and Northern Pacific roads will be received soon. Construction must begin by March 1 and finish by September 1 with an estimated cost of 55000. The O W R and N company will build the depot under an agreement tied to yard arrangements with Northern Pacific.
