Burton Smith an 18 month old son of Mr and Mrs W J Smith of Ocosta drowned in Redmond Creek Monday night while playing near the slough. He slipped in and rescue efforts failed. Funeral held Tuesday at Ocosta with Rev F F W Greene of Aberdeen officiating. The couple also has a little girl.
H Wetherald and Mrs Wetherald with two daughters escaped death when a wagon they rode in was backed over an embankment after the horse was frightened by an automobile truck. The party suffered painful bruises but were saved by jumping from the wagon.

In Olympia on August 13 1913 the state land board used the new law to grant Stearns Lumber an extra year to remove timber from eighty acres in Chehalis county. The amended statute allows extensions up to five years with a yearly rent of 1.50 per acre, balancing tax and rental collection with relief for the lumberman unable to remove timber.
Aug. 14 Hoquiam reports the Hodgdon building on Eighth street between J and K streets should be ready for occupants by early September. Contractor Ed Hannan cites rapid progress since arrival of glazed cream brick from Los Angeles. The 50 by 120 foot structure costs about $23,000 and will house two ground floor stores with offices above. The south storeroom will host Variety store owner W. L. Leighton. the north room will house confectionery and ice cream parlor proprietor H. T. Pierson.
