Prof Riser the new city school superintendent will arrive in Abbeville about July 10 to begin work for the fall term. The public will have a chance to meet him and Mrs Riser before the school year starts.

Sixteen Army Camps To Be Built In War Department Cut

The War Department cut cantonments to sixteen from thirty two for the forthcoming draft army. Four sites Atlanta American Lake Wash Ayre were chosen with tents urged for southern camps. Officials say the change won’t delay mobilization though some guard divisions may be consolidated and built under canvas.

National Guard to France Soon Plans Cut to Sixteen Cantonments

Washington reports indicate cost and resource limits force a reduction from thirty two to sixteen cantonments. Proposed sites include Columbia and Atlanta with three Southeastern divisions. National Guard training abroad faces congressional skepticism despite Gen Bliss favoring overseas training.

Submarines Fire on American Ship Kroonland

Two German submarines attacked the American liner Kroonland off the British coast firing four torpedoes. One hit near the bow after zigzagging and a second torpedo struck the side as the vessel moved at high speed but failed to explode. Gunners aboard the Kroonland replied with explosive shells toward the unseen submersibles.

Owens Speed Wins College Pharmacy Prizes

Howard Owens Speed of Abbeville won the college prize for best work in pharmacy and the Cole L. Blease medal for pharmacy. Parents and friends applaud his brilliant college career at The Citadel and at the Medical College in Charleston. He received his diploma in pharmacy before entering the Fort Oglethorpe Training Camp.

Navy recruiting drives to fill South Carolina calls

Navy recruiting officers will station at every county seat tomorrow to answer questions about life pay and opportunities and to conduct examinations. Free transportation to Columbia for qualified applicants will be provided as 400 more recruits are needed statewide. Spartanburg led with 43 enrollments, Richland 42, Greenville 29. Beaufort has not yet contributed a recruit.

Confederate Veterans Pay Tribute at Arlington Reunion

Washington June 3 Confederate veterans in Washington attended annual reunion services at Arlington National Cemetery. President Wilson and Mrs. Wilson were present but the president did not speak, receiving an ovation instead. Gen. Bennett H. Young and Rep. Frank Clark spoke, honoring the Confederate dead and the principle of self government while plans were laid for a future memorial march led by Gen. George P. Harrison.
