Red Cross Week Proclaimed by President Wilson

The nation is urged to donate one hundred million dollars during Red Cross Week June 18 to 25 1917 to support soldiers in France. Abbeville county’s effort aims for about four thousand dollars guided by editor of The Press and Banner as local chairman.

Army worm causes worry on several county farms

Farmers report the army worm or a similar pest damaging crops across Antreville and nearby areas. Dr Anderson’s cotton and vetch, plus losses on Reid Rogers and Wakefield and Beaty fields, prompted state college officials to study the outbreak. Spraying with arsenate of lead is under way in efforts to halt further destruction.

Miss Mamie Devlin Returns After Auto Crash Reunion at Agnes Devlin’s Wedding

Miss Mamie Devlin, age 50, injured in a Florence auto accident two weeks ago, has recovered enough to travel to Due West for her sister Miss Agnes Devlin’s wedding. She cannot serve as maid of honor, disappointing both sisters and friends, while Abbeville friends celebrate her recovery.

Mr and Mrs George R Dusenberry mourn the death of their infant son William Radcliffe on June 6 after six weeks illness. Funeral services were held at Gilgal on Thursday conducted by Rev R E Sharp.

Death of W. J. Jones at 68 in county burial Sunday

Mr. W. J. Jones a popular county citizen died at his son S. E. Jones home near Stevenson's Crossing last Saturday. He leaves five daughters five sons and a widow. He was 68. Burial took place at Shiloh cemetery last Sunday afternoon.

His father was born in Germany and preached for many years in America in the Fatherland language.
