Bearded Club members from Waynesboro plan a Washington visit to showcase their whiskers ahead of Waynesboro’s 150th anniversary celebration. The group formed in February to let their beards grow and marks its sesquicentennial observance with a major event.
Benjamin Siegel a noted gambler and former public enemy was shot to death in Beverly Hills after returning from dinner with friends. Police Captain White said a gunman fired through curtains, striking Siegel as he read a newspaper on a divan. Allen Smiley and two guests were present. Smiley described ducking from the blast as shots shattered the room. The Flamingo Gambling Club owner in Las Vegas was linked to past criminal cases including Murder, Inc. and a 1939 Hollywood killing.

Delbert Young was appointed to succeed Storts as principal of Roosevelt Junior High, both by unanimous vote and effective immediately. Summers noted neither candidate filed a formal application but sought consideration from local staff. Cleary, Lash High principal for 29 years, will retire after the eighth week of the summer session.
