A heated dispute over state and local taxing authority erupted as officials awaited a U S senate ruling on a bill to exempt state fairs from the 220 percent ad valorem tax. Charles Pfeiffer cited possible federal action while urging a formal ruling and noting letters to Senators Bricker seeking exemption.
Martha Spencer, 78, of Morgan County, died in Bethesda Hospital after a stove explosion and fire at her frame cottage six miles from McConnelsville in Meigsville town. Rescued by neighbors, she was taken to the hospital and will be sent to the funeral home.
President accepted an invitation to Brazil and a Brazilian ambassador Martins said the visit would occur soon after a conference with Mr. and reporters. He noted a formal invitation from President Dutra and said the trip was approved and to go to Brazil “as soon as possible.”
Three men were led in for questioning today as authorities continued a tentative investigation into a bomb blast that wrecked the automobile. J. Kelch, former state enforcement chief, was also called for questioning amid efforts to obtain complete information about his activities with the enforcement unit. Kelch had left the Cleveland Vice force on leave and quit his state job May 16 after four months.
A probate court petition by administrator Neil Starker seeks a public sale of property at Sixth and Marietta to settle the Wedge estate. The 350000 estate includes two garages used for public school vocational classes, a filling station, and a residence. Defendants and associated relatives are named, with potential school eviction if sold and the garage equipment valued at 35100.
The State Board of Tax Appeals ruled the Church of God Frazer spurg tax exempt, delaying decisions on four other properties in Zanesville Muskingum county. The properties include Abbot Home for Aged Men on Greenwood Avenue, a cemetery on East Pike, Bethesda Nurses' Home, and a Bethesda hospital parking lot. County officials attended the Columbus hearing.
Joseph Majczek, 39, will receive $24,000 from the state after Gov Green approved a bid. He plans to use part of the funds to reward his mother for years of effort to win his release, including a trip for her. Majczek was pardoned in 1945 after a 93 year sentence for a 1932 slaying of a Chicago police officer. He also plans education for his son and mortgage relief.
E Arnold of Columbus today was named assistant to William Comy, managing director of Zanesville Chamber of Commerce. Arnold, a College of Commerce graduate, previously led Delta Upsilon state and served on fraternity managers boards. He will handle membership committee duties and assist with special assignments as the chamber reorganizes its staff. Miss Anna Louise Fouts noted, turn to Page Thirteen.

Debate centers on Dillon dam funding and federal construction appropriations in the war department bill. FCC authorised the sale of WHIZ in Zanesville to the Southeastern Ohio Broadcasting Corporation forming by B Littick, Clay Littick, Arthur Littick, Ernest and Clarence Graham. Sale price 272500 with transfer within 39 days. FM transmitter permit also moved to new firm. no major staff changes expected.
The annual summer concerts by the Zanesville Memorial Band begin Sunday afternoon June 29 at Putnam Hill Park. Concerts run weekly on Sundays and Friday evenings. The Gay concerts are at McIntire Park. The band is directed by Paul A. Hern.
Detective Frank E. Sounik 43 spent five hours in county jail for 260 dollars in alimony arrears. Detective Inspector Charles O. Nevel vouched for his character to Judge Alva Corlett, who ordered release with a week to settle or return to jail. The judge warned he would enforce the court order.
Bevin told the House of Commons he will push for speed in talks on Europe aid under the Marshall plan. He said he spent six weeks in Moscow to gain a mandate and refuses to delay economic recovery by procedural paraphernalia.
Mrs Vera Grace Church 34 of Dresden road wife of Harold Church former city engineer died early this morning after a yearlong illness at Strong Memorial Hospital Rochester New York She had lived in Zanesville most of her life except one year in Youngstown She was a Central Presbyterian member and past president of the Senior Bethesda Hospital League Surviving besides her husband are a son Edwin Church of Rochester a daughter Mrs Michael Lussville and three sisters Davies Lancaster Rapp Raymondville Tex and Mrs Lillian Gratz Houston The body will be brought to the Dean Swoge funeral home

Officials caution the record awaits federation certification. observers note the run improved U S standing after 24 years.
A locally reported soap box derby lists seventeen entrants with ages from 10 to 15, including drivers from Roseville Newton and South Zanes. Sponsors include Dennison Used Cars White Chevrolet Morris and Snyder F Goodrich and Modern Taxi Service. Entries may be made at White Chevrolet on West Main Street.

Slayings of Emily Griffith 65 and Florence Griffith 67 shock a mountain cabin community 30 miles northwest of Denver. Ailing suspect Fred W. Lundy 95 a former Denver teacher is sought after a sequence tying him to the deaths. Police say the sisters were shot in the head from behind and Lundy left in his car after arranging a trip to Illinois. A coded note and a false farewell ad surfaced in the investigation as authorities pursue Lundy across the West.
Boston Mayor James M. Curley, sentenced to one to 28 months in jail and a $1006 fine for mail fraud, was ordered to appear in district court for committal. He is reported seriously ill with diabetes and hypertension in a Massachusetts hospital, where doctors say he is recovering.
Cleveland jurors found Rose Nagy, 42, guilty of first degree manslaughter in the death of her mentally retarded 4 year old son Rudolph Sutoris after 12 hours of deliberation. The verdict was called eminently fair and merciful by Common Pleas Judge Samuel Sibert Hi.
