Four inmates slipped from the Marysville state penitentiary for women during a rainstorm. Velma West 33 and three others fled after a key passed under a cell door. Authorities pursued via a statewide search as the escape prompted questions and testimonies from staff and inmates.
Former U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals judge Martin T. Manton received a two year federal prison term and a $10,000 fine after conviction for conspiracy to sell judicial favors. Judge W. Calvin Chesnut imposed the sentence following a lengthy plea for the jury verdict to be set aside.
Senate opponents of a Roosevelt third term push a one term plan. The judiciary committee plans to vote July 3 on a constitutional amendment. Senator Burke criticizes a third term as dangerous to democracy and Senator Van Nuys also opposes it. Paul McNutt is named as a possible Democratic candidate who would back Roosevelt if he seeks renomination. Secretary Ickes supports a two term limit concept, labeling the tradition political humbug.
Martin L. Davey charged Gov. John W. Bricker lied about a $3 million deficit in his Inaugural address. Speaking in Lima he claimed a $3 million surplus instead and criticized Bricker’s administration for high spending and political motives. He said 2,000 highway workers were fired for party affiliation.
Ayward Wisconsin deputies pursue 25 year old Ray Olson on a warrant for stolen property. Sheriff George Schuetter and Deputy teams trail Olson from Chippewa County and into the northeast sector as night falls. The manhunt began after the stakeout at John Blue Sky's shack where authorities say the suspect fled.
Robert A. te, 62, a Newark restaurant owner and sports enthusiast, died at his home in Hare, Bilis. He had not missed a game, dating from the opener of the world series.
Writings by Charles Wesley Turner and Buckner described a Hollywood trip to attract film stars to back bonds and redeemable investments. James W. Liddle testified he advanced $10,000, while Frank Morgan called Turner’s offer fantastical. Herbert Marshall and Miss Young were linked to the case in court.
Paris Isaac Leifer styled Grand Rabbi of Brooklyn was sentenced to two years in prison and fined about 122 for smuggling narcotics into the United States. He was arrested here last July with a heavy load of narcotics bound in Bibles. Two other men charged with Leifer were acquitted.
An intruder broke into Harry Pettitt’s home and, after climbing through a kitchen window, toppled a table and fell. He knocked himself unconscious by striking the kitchen sink, aiding his capture by residents.
Washington reports indicate President Roosevelt aims for House and Senate votes on neutrality revision before adjournment. House may repeal arms embargo and ban on Americans from war zones, while Senate deliberations on foreign policy are expected to be lengthy. Twenty one senators signed a round robin urging embargo continuation. In other news, Sam Snead announced he will stay in the United States to compete in the PGA tournament.
In Paris a senate session heard Daladier announce a new submarine to replace the Phenix. The craft will be of the same type and name as the Phenix, which carried 71 men last June 15. Naval and air units resumed efforts after a search off French Indo China.
Readjustment announced at Marietta reduces county debts for feeble minded care and cuts weekly costs from 5.50 to 3.50. Prosecutor Virgil E. Johnson says Muskingum county will gain about 25 000 from past overcharges and save around 5 000 yearly.
London report says the Princesses spoke with Queen Elizabeth and King George by ship-to-shore telephone for ten minutes. They shared plans to sail Thursday on a destroyer from Southampton to meet returning parents and to visit the zoo to feed animals. The king and queen rode the Empress of Britain in sunshine with a light night fog and a 20 knot breeze.
About 120 British women and children depart by river boat from the beleaguered British concession to Tangku and coastal steamers amid threats against families. Chinese workers in the concession quit under fear of reprisals as Japan intensifies control and warns against third power interference in blockade actions.
The tax revision bill, approved by the House with one dissent, moves toward Senate action. Democrats and Republicans alike backed the measure repealing the undistributed profits tax while keeping other excise levies, despite opposition from some Republicans who sought retroactive repeal.
Cecil L. Bartholomew, retired British officer, sues for 1 million dollars alleging his son Freddie Bartholomew earns 125000 yearly but his parents receive no portion. The suit names Mylli cent Bartholomew as guardian, Isaac Pacht as lawyer, Leonard J. Meyberg holding a separate judgment, and John and Jane Does as defendants. The action claims misrepresentation by the guardian and pressure to place Freddie with the aunt.
Two hundred twenty four refugees landed from the German liner Rhakotis and were granted temporary asylum by France. Many applied to the United States for possible passage to the New World.
President Roosevelt urged two major amendments to the House passed relief measure. He seeks removal of a three member WPA board and the $125 million civil service ban on political activity linked to relief. Senate testifies on the $1.735 billion package as Byrnes and Harrington appear with leaders.

Dr. Francis E. Townsend announced at the fourth national convention of the Townsend National Recovery Plan in Indianapolis that his movement might form a new political party if existing parties fail to cooperate. The 72-year-old founder warned that if parties remain reactionary, they could be replaced.
Velma Baker Fink, 22, charged with first degree murder in the death of 10 week old Halion Baker Fink, awaits arraignment in Sandusky county jail. She refused to see her ex husband Ervin Fink, 23, during a jail visit as authorities prepare the case.
