Washington officials act swiftly seeking full Supreme Court reversal after Justice Douglas granted an indefinite stay to the Rosenbergs. The court is in recess until October but could be recalled by Chief Justice Vinson at any time.
The Rosenbergs seek a writ of habeas corpus to test government custody and a possible stay. Justice Douglas noted power to stay after the Supreme Court refused earlier, basing action on a point not raised in prior appeals. Clergymen urged clemency as Eisenhower declined a reprieve. Pvt. Michael Snyder, 22, of near New Lexington, brother of Robert Snyder, was killed in Korea June 12. He served with the 15th regiment, Third division, and was at Outpost Harry. He entered service May 29 1952, trained at Camp Breckenridge, arrived in Japan February 1, went to Korea three weeks later. Survived by parents Mr. and Mrs. Clement Snyder, two brothers including Staff Sgt. Eugene Snyder, and three sisters Rita Doris and Sue.

Fifty thousand rioters battled Red rule in East Berlin as Soviet troops with tanks and armored cars fired on crowds. Martial law was declared, curfews imposed, and Otto Nuschke fled to the West. Casualties reported as at least one dead and several wounded.
President Eisenhower denounces calls to burn books that criticize communism and warns against destroying library holdings.
