Reds Launch Heavy Assault Across Central Korea
More than five thousand Chinese Reds attacked at a dozen points along a fifty mile front in central Korea today, driving Allied troops from main line positions. American and South Korean infantry fought hand to hand as Reds entered UN trenches, with one sector of the line shifted south after the Reds overran the former Red stronghold known as the Triangle. Bitter fighting stretched from White Horse Mountain to the Pukhan River. Fifth Air Force said four Allied planes were lost in the week, while seven Reds MiGs were knocked down, with two probably destroyed and two damaged. Two F86 Sabres were downed by ground fire, no air losses to Communist jets. Another Thunderjet was lost to ground fire in the week ending May 29.
