Tornadoes ripped through Southeastern Michigan and Northwestern Ohio killing 141 and injuring over 700. Flint bore heavy destruction with 111 bodies found near its outskirts as Cleveland and surrounding areas faced widespread damage, power outages, and emergency deployments by state police and National Guard.
A 27 minute tornado tore a 10 mile path through Cleveland causing at least eight deaths and 55 injuries with damage estimated at three million dollars by the police chief. Five victims were found in two collapsed frame houses at Franklin Avenue and West 28th Street, and Jack Chambers was found near a live wire at 11525 West 32nd Street. The Red Cross dispatched workers to the west side to shelter the homeless, Civil Defense urged auxiliary police to report, radio and TV stations resumed quickly, WSRS Cleveland Heights kept operating.
Two Boy Scouts William Taylor and Phillip Ford, ages 18 and 17, were safe after an empty canoe drifted in the rain swollen Muskingum River seven miles south of McConnelsville. They had launched at 8:30 a.m. and were seen near Philo dam two hours later. The worried father, Dr W M Taylor, and mother rushed toward Zanesville when notified. Local sheriff investigations followed the sighting of the canoe by farmer Wendell Thompkins near McConnelsville.
Pittsburgh reports a pay settlement shapes the pattern for the U S steel industry as U S Steel Corp and the United Steelworkers prepare to resume bargaining. David J. Betty Smith, 23, of Middletown, was found beaten to death in a Hotel Milner room in Cincinnati. A man found with injuries, who said his name was Clinton Turner, 35, of Martin, Kentucky, was taken into custody after claiming memory loss. No charges were filed immediately. The victim formerly lived in Emporium, Pennsylvania.

Hugh E. Nesbitt aged 60 a Columbus businessman died Monday hours after being named treasurer of Ohio State University a post he had held since 1941 officials said Nesbitt died shortly after accepting the appointment in Columbus Ohio
Clifton Utley a 49 year old NBC News commentator and syndicated columnist collapsed yesterday at work and was taken to St Luke's Hospital A hospital spokesman said he suffered an acute breakdown from overwork and was given oxygen His condition was described as fairly good
Zanesville's 45 year old Mayor William G Watson welcomed a grandson as his daughter Tose Maurie, now Mrs Robert Morris, gave birth to a six pound six ounce son this morning at Good Samaritan hospital. The Morrises reside at 1005 Sunset Avenue.
Allied and Communist troops clashed in skirmishes across Korea as armistice talks moved to staff officers. South Korean infantry counterattacked near an Eastern Front outpost called the Gook's Castle, with fighting ongoing. American troops also engaged on Western and Central Fronts alongside China’s forces. Rain hampered operations. B26 bombers hit Red supply trucks, and one bomb landed near President Syngman Rhee’s residence in Seoul.
Mrs. Adam J. Kaskas former Helena Henderson of Philo and her family escaped harm as a Cleveland tornado wrecked the home area. The twister shattered rear windows upturned maple trees and ripped up sidewalks while hailstones the size of golf balls peppered the streets around 13th and Superior. Kaskas moved to Cleveland two decades ago and is a former Good Samaritan hospital nurse, with sisters Stella Henderson and Olive Waltz and brothers Leo and Orville Henderson.
Richard H. W. Jesse, 60, of 718 West Bourne Avenue, was critically injured during last night's tornado in Cleveland where he worked. He, who rooms at a Cleveland YMCA, went outside to get a flashlight from his truck and was struck by heavy timbers. Treated at Fairview Park Hospital, his wife and four sons traveled to Cleveland to be with him.
ROME A surge in extremist left and right strength imperils Premier Alcide De Gasperi's pro Western coalition. Early returns show his four party bloc within reach of a parliamentary majority, but opposition wide across both wings narrows the government’s lead. Senate tabulation also weakens De Gasperi with unofficial returns showing about 48.6 percent of votes counted.
