Mine Fire Project Completed in Perry County
A WPA built network of clay filled tunnels near New Straitsville Perry County will finish Thursday to slow a coal seam fire burning since 1884. The project, begun in October, will lay off about 250 WPA workers as engineers say flames may have burned 40 miles toward the Ohio River and six miles toward Coshocton over 200 years. Two Perry and one Hocking county walls confine the fire to roughly 30 square miles, with tunnels as long as one and one quarter miles and walls about 14 feet thick and high.

WPA Office Here Reports Funds Available For Athens Co. Projects
L. Gibson, director of the southeastern Ohio WPA district, told Dr. Carl Watson that WPA could hire hundreds more workers in Athens County if the commissioners provide adequate job schedules, materials, and sponsor cash.
