New York plans a lavish New Year’s Eve to mark 1924 with hotels and clubs tariffed at high prices while liquor remains plentiful. Broadway venues boost prices for orchestras and seats as crowds prepare for upscale celebrations. Prohibition enforcement is uncertain and restraint is limited by demand.
Nine hundred Zanesville area children enjoyed a two hour Christmas party at the Weller theater. The event featured a film program, vaudeville acts, and gift distribution led by Santa Claus with help from the theater staff and Boy Scouts.
The Day Nursery fundraising drive faced a shortfall with a goal of 3500 dollars, about 2590 collected by noon Saturday. Organizers expect additional subscriptions by Saturday afternoon and evening, with representatives available at the Zanesville Publishing Company offices. Idaho-wide Klansmen rumored involvement mentioned in late reports.
Mrs Mary Danison of this city plans a Friday trip to Chicago to locate her husband John Dansor missing since July. Doctors used hypnosis to recover his memory but no name or address was recalled. Also noted is the birth of a daughter to Mr and Mrs Carl Reed of Festman on Friday evening.
The parole board granted clemency to chiropractors E Hull L West and J Brooks and others who had served jail time for practicing medicine without licenses. They were released after sentences were commuted and fines reduced, with terms set for repayment and reentry into practice under supervision. The action followed hearings and negotiations with local officials and affected parties.
Dasion December report states one of the foremost residents died at 8 p.m. after being struck by an automobile driven by Miss Editi. David on, 18, was accompanied by Mrs. Mary Crawford Whiteman. He served as editor of the Xevia Herald and was postmaster under Grover Cleveland.
The Joseph Seep Agency, buyer for Standard Oil Co., announced a 15 cent rise in crude oil prices for select grades. New prices show Cabell at 1.35 and Somerset medium at 1.30.
Dee 7 Atlanta judge sentenced Phu Ku Fox, former Ku Klux Klan editor, to life imprisonment after a nine hour trial found him guilty of murdering Attorney W. S Coburn on November 3. Fox's insanity plea failed. an appeal is planned. Also reports forecast a snowless Christmas with fair conditions for most of the United States despite rain and snow in parts of the Great Lakes and Pacific Northwest.
A Republican executive committee endorses a woman for the Frazeysburg post office in a county contest. The meeting in Weare discussed the Adamsville post office and other local appointments. Delegates and applicants were named, with committee approval expected after a Cleveland convention reference.
Dee Charran notes a speech by G E Harter before the American Literary group criticizing Christmas foods. He warns against white bread rolls potatoes soups or meat broth and recommends limited turkey portions and uncooked fruit with black coffee to finish a frugal meal.
Columbus Dec 22. In the Republican sub gubernatorial race James A White state superintendent of the Anti Silcon League is reported to have decided to run. Rumors say Rad Hynicka Hamilton County leader supports White if he allows Hynicka to name the slate of prohibition petitions seeking White to run for governor.
Tentative delegate selections across Ohio districts form a volatile race. W Mills Ma Fieux and Mc Frank Ransbottom are listed as favorites in the 17th district as Hynicka battles foes for control in Cincinnati. James White, Ohio Anti Saloon League head, seeks Governor bid and possible tie to Hynicka for Cincinnati backing.
Steubenkiie December 22 The arrest of John Cole a former enforcement officer on extortion charges was branded as a frame-up by Cole and by Cole held on a 4066 dollar bond by Justice Arthur Gormen on a bribe charge from Charles Pirey Fork who says he paid monthly installments for protection of his liquor business Ku Klux Klan officials sponsoring the state investigation here say Cole has been framed to distract from the probe.
Columbus police report 17 year old Linyd 19 year old Lester James and Owen Roshen admit armed thefts in four nearby villages Circleville Groveport Gahanna and Grove City. Their loot is described as modest though jewelry and clothing valued at $2000 were stolen from Mrs Minnie Wolk’s Cleveland home in a separate burglary on December 22.
Coroner L. E Grimes ruled Murphy died from accidental self stabbing in the right groin and severed femoral vessels. Davis died from a self-inflicted shot wound to the left breast. Other inquests cited Miller, Sterling, Agin, Hopkons, Roberts, Darner, Chapman, and Henry with various causes from accident, poisoning, or illness.
