Zanesville post office set an all time daily record with 235000 pieces of mail cancelled yesterday as Christmas mailing peaked. Postmaster Howard McCracken said production was the roughest seen, with 104 extra clerks and carriers at full speed and only one regular employee absent. First seventeen days of December show 200 more cancellations than last year. Windy traffic hours: 8 to 6 weekdays, 8 to 5 Saturdays.

Expressway Hearing Set in Zanesville Project
The hearing is required by law despite voters approving the project. Arguments for and against will be heard and a transcript sent to the state highway director for approval. State highway officials opened bids for relocating 8.18 miles of US 40 between Jacksontown and Kirkersville. J.A. Jones Construction Co. bid 3.93 million for the by pass while V.N. Holderman bid 3.16 million for the Jackson town to Kirkersville segment. Plans call for a four lane divided highway south of the present road.
