Soviet troops aided by heavy tanks and air power pierced Finnish positions at Pashemosa near Salmiperj, advancing southward amid fierce skirmishes. Russian forces moved toward Hyanjei as Finnish countermeasures limited but did not halt the push on the Ladoga region.
A warehouse attendant in Powhatan County, West Virginia, was held without bail on a charge of fatally poisoning his estranged wife, mother of seven, with strychnine after traces were found in her stomach, liver, and spleen. An autopsy was ordered as suspicions arose from a child's remark.
Heywood Broun, famed columnist and American Newspaper Guild president, dies at 51 after pneumonia from bronchial illness. Born Heywood Campbell Broun, he forged a long career as reporter critic and labor advocate, serving at World Telegram World and Post. Survived by wife Connie Madison and son Heywood Hale Broun, he coauthored several books including The Box Grew Older and Candle Follows His Nose.
A severe weekend crash spree left multiple fatalities across Ohio as cars collided with trains and buses. Victims include Mrs Thomas Spanes and her child, Jean and Donna Louse, with other deaths in Plymouth Akron Bedford and Canfield. Pedestrians and bystanders suffered injuries. authorities noted no passengers aboard a stranded bus.
A derailment near the Canadian National Railways yards killed a soldier and left five others slightly injured when a troop train collided with a freight car. Corporal R W Connors of London was among the casualties.

Special to MacCONNELLVILLE Morgan county town reels from a Sunday slot machine theft in the Coffee Shoppe beside Sheriff J. B Adrean’s office. The bandit, well dressed, grabbed the machine, fled in a parked car, and Berry fired on the speeding auto with a 32 caliber pistol as investigators rush to the scene. The machine held little money.
Willam Watt Curtiss, a Nob le county youth, was captured in the Panama Canal Zone in connection with the July 29 hold up of the Tower Salem Commercial Bank. Curtiss, fraternal to Lawrence Curtiss of Senecaville, faced FBI questioning as a fugitive from justice. He was en route to Hawaii after arrest aboard a patrol air transport Chateau Thierry. Curtiss had enlisted in the army last summer following the bank robbery. Francis Walsh of North Cinton had already been arrested and pleaded guilty at Manetta.
The sheriff's office says Capt ROW Goswell master of the damaged British tanker British Officer committed suicide today. No details were immediately available. The British Officer collided with the tug Mohita early Thursday in the Mississippi River about 25 miles south of Mandate Bend after completing loading at the docks.
A Brazil based informant who boarded the British carrier Ark Royal says crew members reported the 22,000 ton ship was struck by a large bomb in the North Sea. He claims one gun was wrecked and new plates show damage, with no attack date given. The German high command had previously announced destruction of a British carrier on Sept 26.

Berlin claimed four British warships sunk by Nazi planes and three more damaged, with Pearl and Serenity reported sunk and other vessels crippled.
A fire at a reconditioned barn used as a dormitory at the Georgia State School near Gradwood, close to Augusta, killed five boys. Names listed include Field Lyttle, Hoyt Cook, William Youmans, Curtis Sargeant, and Gn Curwood Creech, all aged 15 to 22. Two other youths were injured critically as 24 boys slept. some escaped via piping or leaped to safety as flames swept the first floor linen room and laundry. Fire discovered around 10 am.
German pocket battleship Graf Spee lies burning and exploding in the River Plate estuary off Montevideo after Captain Langsdorff ordered scuttling. He alleges Uruguayan delays sabotaged repairs and vows to protest to Berlin as crews are evacuated to Argentina for internment.
Berlin reports a German protest to Uruguay over the Graf Spee sinking after Montevideo authorities refused to allow time for repairs. Four Graf Spee crewmen were arrested in Montevideo while others may be interned for the war duration. captain Hans Langsdorff and the ship’s officers were among the German crew.
Cleveland mayor Harold H Burton expressed optimism that there will be no January relief crisis and possibly no 1940 crisis. He said the state would have a second 10 million dollar relief fund after January 1 and a new ruling would allow the city to certify against expected state funds. Burton also noted the city could use general fund money in advance pending relief levy replacement and that the state administration would roll out its 1940 relief program early in the year.
