A wreck on a western U S highway leaves twelve dead including an 18 month old and a girl in critical condition. Victims were in a car struck by another vehicle in a bone chilling crash reported near Vanderbriff. The scene showed bodies scattered and an improvised rescue response.
Police report a night-time robbery at the Suburban Trust Co. in College Park. The couple fled after forcing entry and taking an undetermined amount, with deposits tied to a later count of about 15 000 dollars as officials probe the weekend crime and seek Bishoff and spouse.
In Portsmouth Ohio emergency phone service returned after a two month plus nine hour shutdown. Ohio Consolidated Telephone Co. restored service overnight prompting officials to monitor for any further issues while residents relied on radio for emergencies.
The East Pike project, outlined to the Highway Construction council, carries a ten million price tag with a tentative 1963 start and right of way acquisitions in 1962. Troopers may work 10 hour days and leaves are canceled to boost highway safety during Christmas and New Year periods. Last year 609 deaths were recorded during the holidays.
Dr Frank Stutz a Dayton physician and longtime vocational guidance consultant at Zanesville High School died after a lingering illness. A native of Mount Hope he helped establish the Marine school in Dayton in 1917 and spoke at the YMCA. He was 74.
City officials discuss challenged muffler rules as four drivers were arrested for noise violations over the weekend. Raymond Gladman 20 and Clyde Marsh 20 faced fines and bonds, Marvin Woster 19 forfeited a bond, and an 11 year old from White Cottage will be arraigned in juvenile court. Zanesville asserts police power under the city charter to enforce the ordinance while opponents seek a lawsuit.
Four persons were injured shortly before noon today when cars driven by Francis E. McGuire 40 of West Lafayette and Arthur Ensign 83 of Leesville collided at the junction of Routes 16 and 77 near Trinway State highway patrolmen said Samuel McGuire a passenger in the McGuire car and Mrs Carrie Ensign 78 were taken to Coshocton hospital for treatment Frankis McGuire was treated at a Coshocton physician s office Patrolmen said the accident occurred when Ensign turned his car from Route 16 into the path of the McGuire car traveling on Route 77
Downtown retailers announce extended hours this week until 8 30 pm to help Christmas shoppers. Stores remain at regular hours for staff to spend Christmas Eve with families and merchants say stock levels meet demand.
