A Hungarian rebel source says 2500 guerrillas operate from Mecsek Mountains near Pecs harassing Soviet troops. reports say some 2000 students in Satoraljahly region north of Miskolc were wiped out, with ongoing tension and accusations of purges in Budapest.
President Eisenhower called a conference with Lewis L. Strauss to discuss Atomic Energy Commission outlays for fiscal year starting July 1. The talks cover nuclear weapons development and peaceful uses of atomic energy. White House officials expect no public outcome announced at this time.
A Nassau County jury sentenced Angelo LaMarcha to death by electric chair for the kidnapping and murder of 32 day old Peter Weinberger. The 31 year old auto mechanic showed little reaction as the verdict was read, defense claiming temporary insanity and financial pressures led to the crime.
The Viking rocket, designated the first earth satellite program test, reached 125 miles up and 4,000 mph before landing in the Atlantic Ocean about 180 miles from Cape Canaveral. James P. Shrimplin 21 of Warsaw died when his car hit a parked milk truck east of Warsaw at 1:15 a.m. His 19 year old companion Gene Poorman of Warsaw was in critical condition at Coshocton Memorial Hospital. Shrimplin, recently quit from Coshocton county highway department, and Poorman were returning from Coshocton. Shrimplin’s death followed the car’s loss of control on a curves near Warsaw. The milk truck owner was Francis Smailes of Warsaw. Shrimplin survived by his mother Nellie Shrimplin and father Russell Mose Shrimplin plus seven brothers. Burial plans set for Fischer funeral home Warsaw.
The 37 year old New Haven Clock Co closed its doors Friday leaving about 1,000 workers unemployed. The firm filed for bankruptcy just before closing and federal tax liens totaling 206,428 dollars were filed against the company this week.
A 26 year old Meigs County man died when the car he rode in left State Forestry Road and hit a tree half a mile south of Zaleski. State Highway Patrol identified the victim as Arthur W. Ellis of Carpenter.

In Garden Grove California an 11 year old boy assisting his father operating searchlights for an ad display was mauled by a 300 pound lioness that escaped a wire cage. The boy Brian Trenholm was treated for a severely bitten knee gashed hip and multiple lacerations at County Hospital. The lioness pounced when the boy neared the cage and after the attack was subdued by bystanders and the animal owner. it fled across Brookhurst Avenue before being lassoed by its owner.
Linda Miller 13 of Vermilion was struck and killed by a car Friday near her home. The incident occurred in Vermilion, prompting an investigation by local authorities.
A young black bear named Butch, escaped from a zoo eight months ago, roams freely on the island. Trainers say the growing bear may outgrow his collar which could choke him as he adapts to wild life.
