At least 60 Italian combat aircraft have been flown to Finland to bolster its defense against aggression. More planes are promised and Italian pilots may operate them in Finnish operations. Some aircraft seen in Spain are among the deliveries.
Cleveland police detained a 7e year old mechanic tied to the torso killer case. Detectives compare his handwriting to letters sent from Los Angeles six months earlier claiming victims in Ohio and burying one in LA. The suspect arrived from San Francisco six weeks ago and denies links to the Los Angeles correspondence. Authorities in Pennsylvania consider a possible link to the so called mad butcher and a swamp area slaying near New Castle.
In Cincinnati Ohio the defense in a district court case cited state scrutiny of Arlington Park cemetery lot sales in 1936. Dayton attorney Orel J. Myers testified he heard state commerce director Alfred Benesch warn Marlon Gilbert to discontinue selling cemetery lots as an investment. Gilbert is among 12 defendants charged with mail fraud and conspiracy. Chicago based report notes Murray Kneela elected a director of the American Farm Bureau Federation and Forward A. O'Neal reappointed president for a fifth term.
In McDonald Pennsylvania five people, including Mrs. Dickinson and Mrs. Hook both in their 60s, Thomas Lewis 78, and two youths, died when their car collided with an eastbound railroad freight train. Dr. Charles A. Hainaut, 29, survived but unconscious. the others were killed outright as the car was dragged 200 feet along unprotected tracks after leaving a prayer meeting. The crash occurred near a private crossing as they had just left the Holmes home. Engineer M J Kinary and Conductor B I Wilson of Columbus, Ohio, were in charge of the train.
Reds declare blockade of Finland with Baltic fleet and mines in its waters. Finland appeals to Anglo French allies and others for men and materiel to resist the invasion. Finnish forces counterattack on the Karelian Isthmus as Moscow reports gains, while Italy backs Finland and Germany urges Scandinavian friendship amid a broader Axis alignment.
Cincinnati dated report says Commissioner Kenesaw M. Landis cast deciding ballots at a joint meeting of the two major leagues, overruling minor league amendments aimed at easing transfer rules. He voted with the American League in every case while the National League supported the minor leagues' proposals.
Waverly Pike county election judge Beekman of Mifflin township was acquitted today of election law violations. A jury of 10 men and two women freed Beekman after prosecutors failed to obtain indictments from a special grand jury. Common Pleas Judge Wolfe set Wednesday arguments and sought venue change for remaining trials.
Bloodied fingerprints found at the Brooklyn home of Dr. Walter Engelberg, German consular secretary, are those of a former pugilist now believed in Florida. Police labs identified the prints and sent them to Florida for arrest. FBI involvement suggests a formal report for Berlin.
Premier Edouard Daladier denounced Russia’s aggression against Finland and pledged France’s aid. He urged the League of Nations to condemn Moscow’s attack, hoping even those in enemy territory feel protest against the crime and support Finland’s appeal. France would go to Geneva to answer Finland’s call for help.
Evansville Indiana report details how L. ER. Berryman built an at home oxygen tent for his pneumonia stricken bird dog Sally. He placed Sally in an airtight box with a Galaxy cover and fed oxygen from a 10 cubic foot cylinder. Sally began breathing normally within minutes and a veterinarian said she had a good chance to recover.
Elmer Barker, 49, of Oak Street, was seriously injured Friday morning when slate overhead collapsed on him at Monitor Coal Company mine in Darlington near South Zanesville. He was working in a crouched position when the slate fell, causing possible broken back, fractured left leg, and bruises and lacerations. He was transported to Bethesda Hospital via Keck ambulance.
A gasoline truck driver died when the 1500 gallon tanker crashed into a second truck and exploded near Bowling Green. Charles P. McLaughlin, 30, of Detroit, driver of the other vehicle, told Ward county authorities the front truck struck his rear.
A third suspect, Mike Merchak, 20, of Weirton, was arrested near New Cumberland West Virginia in the Senecaville National Bank robbery case. Lawrence Curtiss, 29, of Holliday’s Cove, awaited arraignment in Cambridge on armed robbery charges. Fife, 29, also held, with authorities signaling another arrest soon.
The United States warned Great Britain that American rights must not be violated by the British blockade against German export. A note was sent to the British government though its text was not released. The British order in council blocks German goods on the high seas, even via neutral ships, an action the US says breaches neutral rights under international law.
Noted pianist conductor and composer Ernest Schelling died at age 63 at his home 863 Park Avenue New York. Death was due to a cerebral embolism. He collapsed early today with his bride Peggy Marshall Schelling by his side. Funeral services planned for Sunday followed by cremation.
Rivera, a noted artist and dissident Communist, accused Nazi and Stalinist groups of turning Mexico into a base of operations against the Americas, notably the United States. He declined to testify before the Dies Committee in Texas, offering to answer questions in his own country and suggesting a questionnaire. Trotsky urged testifying on Stalinism, but he refused to address Stalinist activity.
In Beaverdam early today two men attempted to rob a filling station owned by A. O. Wright. Wright shot one man as the other fled toward Lima. Irvin Freed, 23, of Lima, was later found slain on Dr A. A Dalton's porch. Curtis Ambler, 19, and Mervin Freed Irvin's twin brother, were captured nearby after Ambler confessed involvement and that Irvin was killed during the holdup.
