A temporary restraining order requires Ohio Fuel Gas Co to charge the reduced city rates set in an ordinance passed in March. Scioto county clerk of courts Richard E. Evans faced municipal court arraignment on embezzlement charges after an investigator said a shortage appeared in his accounts. Evans, a Steel Workers Organizing Committee organizer, was arrested in Huntington and jailed, with prior disappearance and New Orleans return noted.
Zanesville and Muskingum county faced a tense last minute primary as about 20 000 voters in 117 precincts decide a $220000 civic bond issue. The race featured a sharp Republican split with Black factional leaders accusing rivals of dirty tactics and sending spurious cards under The Zanesville Republican Club name.
A blaze about morning hours destroyed a storage building at Roseville pottery on Linden Avenue. Spontaneous combustion started the fire, fed by straw and packing materials, as workmen opened doors. The 100 by 30 foot corrugated iron structure burned completely with damages around 5000 dollars. workers escaped unharmed. Fire crews fought the blaze as it swept the building.

The infant died two hours after sudden illness while visiting in Detroit.
Chandler conceded his defeat in the Kentucky Senate race as W H Barkley extended his margin after unofficial returns from about 3,400 precincts showed Barkley ahead by 38,159 votes. Barkley led in seven of nine districts while Chandler carried northern Kentucky.
General Motors cars and trucks sold to US consumers in July totaled 78 758, up from June 76 071, and below July last year 163 818. Dealers in the US moved 61 826 in July, versus 72 596 in June and 187 869 a year ago. Including US Canada and overseas shipments, total July sales reached 90 030, down from 101 908 in June and 226 681 in July 1937.
Columbus Ohio state auditor Joseph T. Ferguson said he would travel to Springfield with subpoenas to investigate alleged political influence in poor relief administration. He noted the inquiry followed a complaint from Clark County relief director W A Sullivan and county commissioner chairman F M Wiegel, with attorney and stenographer accompanying.
United States Ambassador Claude Gowers said Spain and the insurgent regime agreed to exchange 56 war prisoners through U S mediation. Each side will release 28 men including 14 American privates and 14 aviators. Americans named for release include Samuel Romer Edgar Acken Richard Browne Van Chase Norman Dorian Morris Conway Charles Barr Frederick Stix Roger Braley Homer Chase Louis Armistead D Barberain John O Berkeley Carroll Billieu and others.
Eight month old Betty Jean Looker died in a Mount Vernon frame house fire. her mother Mary Looker and two other children Joretta and James were severely burned and taken to a hospital. The husband, a chef, was at work when the blaze started, origin undetermined.
In Perry county 1400 WPA laborers returned to work after a two day strike over the demotion of Foreman Ralph Peyton by General Superintendent Nash Stuart. The dispute began when Peyton complained Stuart was forcing his crew too hard. Laborers near Corning led the walkout and spread to other projects. Gibson and WPA leaders will meet to seek a solution.
Temperatures climbed above 90 degrees again with scattered showers in Muskingum County. The Muskingum River remained swollen from last week’s heavy rains, making swimming and boating dangerous. Across Ohio eight people drowned and seven died in weekend traffic accidents.
Federal Social Security auditors spent Sunday in the Ohio state auditor’s office reviewing records of the old age pension administration. State Auditor J. Ferguson said the federal board has threatened to cut Ohio pension aid if it finds evidence that Governor Martin L. Davey used pensions for political purposes.
An agreement announced by the Uptown Chamber of Commerce pledges Harlem workers to receive at least one third of all white collar positions in Harlem retail firms. The deal aims to end racial unrest in Manhattan's Harlem community of about 300 000.
