Comstock mining plans eyed by Wise and partners in Nevada
The San Francisco inquiry reports a $2.5 million offside plan to quarry 400 feet into the Comstock lode at Gold Hill. Alexander Wise of San Francisco with Buckley Wells of New York and Denver and H. G. Humphrey of Reno back the venture to reach $9 million in ore, with profits estimated at 300 to 400 percent. Wells and Humphrey, guests at prominent hotels, discuss the deal at private conferences. No outsiders will join the deal, and details remain limited as Wells declines public comment. The article notes the Nye county boundary change and Elko County’s status, describing Nevada’s rail and road access, geology, and Elko as a key railroad division point with about 4,000 residents.
