Yerington, claiming to be sanitary and progressive, praises a newly installed water and sewer network. Citizens initial tax concerns faded as power issues and minor pump problems were resolved. The city touts improved sanitation, consistent operation, and plans to attract outside attention as a growing, modern community in the Pacific region.
In Yerington Gardnerville the Tuesday banquet honoring Nevada Copper Belt Railroad employees drew about eighty guests at Ludwig’s. Speeches by community leaders praised district progress, the Copper Belt road, and the local marketplace. The Gardnerville team edged Vermillion 38 to 33 in a practice-filled game as locals toasted regional prosperity and civic effort.
Meteorological record for the week ending January 16 1913 lists daily highs and lows for January 10 through January 16 with temperatures ranging from a low of 8 to a high of 42 degrees. Snow measured half an inch on January 15 and 16. Observer G Young notes.
Arrivals at the Rhove named hotel during the week include travelers from Moscow and Moscow era locales. Names listed feature Tully, Porthind, Phenty, and Herrin among others, with guests originating from Mirana and Tahoe regions.
Dobbin, a registered mail clerk at Reno post office, confessed to stealing a $300 package from Verdi destined for Sacramento. The young man, living in Reno about a year, awaits grand jury action.
Judge Langan ruled in favor of Pietro Cassinelli against Venturi and Venturi heirs over dam repairs on the Carson River. The dispute centered on whether a 1865 division between Fish and Barrett created a contract binding successors to fund dam maintenance after a 1907 flood washed away two diversion dams near Dayton.
West and Miss Carrie Gifford tied the knot last Sunday and Monday in Reno then planned to move to Southern California for their new life. Andy West, a partner in Dillon & West Inc, is a well known local businessman. The bride, daughter of Al Gifford, formerly Miller & Lux supervisor, worked as a clerk at Burter's ice cream parlor. Friends extend best wishes as the couple plans to settle back in Yerington soon amid local interest.
At a Carson court session Judge Langin handled an unusual matter involving Jennie Pappas an Indian woman who died leaving four certificates of 100 dollars each in the Postal Savings Bank of Carson Abe Cole was named administrator with bonds fixed at 400.
Ninwed Urie the man who killed a woman and his wife Oy iat Imlay a year ago has been placed in the combined cell at the State prison. He will soon be sentenced again and will probably hang. Carson News
Russell Schooley longtime Dayton resident dies at home after eight days illness from pneumonia following a cold trip to Genoa. He worked as an engineer on a smoke consuming engine, later ran a livery stable in Dayton, married Lizzie Geary, leaves a widow and three children. Large funeral attended. he was a trusted local businessman and loved by family and friends. The Times extends condolences.
James J Clark of the Sree Fish and Gan Natelery near Verdi says stock to begin within a week using 400000 plus fry hatched from eyes of trout from Martette Lake. Fry about an inch long will replenish smaller state streams, with limited release into the Truckee River. Residents may request fry. shipments arrive at the nearest rail station for local distribution. The Walker River area is suggested as a possible site for stocking and growth should not be hindered by warp and catfish.
Camp Fire girls held a Little Girls Party in the Women's Club room on a Sunday evening. Dressed in short dresses and curls, Miss Howe and Mrs Bartlett were noted as charming and received first and second prizes. Games continued until Santa arrived with a brother Santa. The Christmas tree lit up and gifts were distributed as stockings were filled with goodies.
The State Board of Assessors met in Carson and after several days raised valuations on various properties. Beef cattle moved from 30 to 40 per head, milking cows from 30 to 35, stock sheep from 17 to 20, and sheep valued at 2.50 per head. Telephone line valuations set at 30 per mile, telegraph lines unchanged at 40 per mile. Mortgages deemed assessable, Pullman Car Co valued at 300 per mile, Wells, Fargo & Co raised to 950 per mile, American Express 90 per mile, Globe 15 per mile. Southern Pacific main line 35,000 per mile, sidetracks 6 per ton per mile, total near 41,000 per mile with anticipated doubling of tracks.
W H Mitchell, a well known resident of Bishop California, died at his home on the 7th after months of illness. He came to Michigan in 1864, worked in tuning and railroading, then moved to Bishop about twenty years ago, leaving a widow and three daughters. He was active in the Methodist church and a member of Winne tumah Lodge AM. Funeral arrangements were set by the lodge. He leaves daughters Mrs Ballens of Wabiska, Mrs Crimmird of Cal, and Mrs Buelow of Columbia. a sister and four brothers in the eastern states.
Deputy Sheriff Jim Farrell brought Jake Malinick to court on Thursday charged with insanity. Malinick has acted oddly but was not considered dangerous. He has worked at the Nevada Douglass off and on. He attempted to draw his pay, believing it to be bottles of wine and other ribcage, prompting concern. He will be held until Monday for examination.
Sonne returns from Rochester the first of the week in his new Premier automobile, described as one of the finest machines in the district. He reports the camp all right and believes it will be a permanent find, though not of high grade.
The High School Literary Club held its first meeting of the new year with Mr Durand waiving a violin solo and delivering a worthy encore. G M Fraser spoke on Common Sense Dirt Grit and Grouch. The faculty plans for a new high school building proceed while basketball girls train, Camp Fire Girls host nurse guest Miss Sperry, booby prizes go to Kate McNeil and Myrtle Cross, Camp Fire Circle invites local ladies to lead crafts, students donate to the Student Law Fund, and a candy sale raises funds at the lam Hanson and Netherton store.
High school students organize a debating club with instructor Mr. Rk. L. Waggoner who has taught argumentation in college. He offers free instruction and invites interested students to speak with Prof. Bartlett or Mr. Waggoner to join this rare opportunity to improve public speaking skills.
J Lewitt of the Southern Pacific Co visited yesterday and stated the company seeks a deputy sheriff for Fernley on the main line in Lyon County. The area is seen as needing protection from the troublesome element said to be present.
