Canal bursts flood Nevada towns near Fernley
County Commissioner Lob Austin says a ten foot wide break in the Truckee Canal eight miles east of Fernley flooded surrounding land and streets on Sunday. Twenty one men work to repair in about five days, with impacts on Fallon Lovelock Rochester and other mining towns dependent on canal power. A prior break five years ago near the same point flooded an area and washed a railroad trestle. current repairs involve widening the canal with a dredge and restoring water and power to Hazen and Penn.

Three crews of soil examiners conduct a sub surface survey in Lyon County Drainage District No. 1 spanning about 5000 acres in Mason Valley. They bore for water table depth and collect subsoil samples to analyze porosity, guiding canal placement for improved drainage. George W.
