Relatives in Fernley received a War Department message stating August Vaenae was killed in action in France around October 6. Born in Belgium, he lived in the United States twelve years and filed on a homestead near Fernley willed to his sister-in-law Mrs Charles Vaenae. He served after registering for the draft and had military training in Belgium. three brothers served there with no known deaths. Survived by brother Charles in Fernley, his death adds to Lyon County’s honor roll as he fought for liberty and freedom.

Sorrow fills the Hainer home as Bertha Dixie Butner dies at age two after a one day illness described as acute abdominal peritonitis.
