Growth of Newark Office of Dependency Benefits
In less than two years the U S Army Office of Dependency Benefits has expanded from a small unit to a vast operation in Newark New Jersey disbursing more than 4 billion dollars monthly to dependents and handling Class allotments. Hundreds of officers and 9 000 civilians work two shifts to process 12 million dependents, with 542 million in checks issued in April. The agency faces undelivered checks, clerical errors, and public misunderstanding, while training 650 enlisted men in a six week course to improve efficiency.
